Last month, we started a new trivia series here on the Disney Parks Blog – “Name that Costume.” It was a tricky one, but some of you got really close! This time around, it might be a bit easier. But I’ll take any excuse to wear a fun hat.
Can you name that Disneyland Resort costume? Leave your answer in the comments, and I’ll be back later with the answer and the story behind this costume.
UPDATE: Today’s costume is from the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail at Disney California Adventure park.
Set in a living forest of young coastal redwoods and incense cedar, Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is a celebration of California’s magnificent wilderness parks, so cast members in this area play the role of Park Rangers.
The costumes in this area were inspired by authentic National Park Service Ranger uniforms from the 1930s. Two unique features of the costume are the hat and the patch. The patch is a significant part of the costume as it resembles the arrowhead patch that is used as the official National Park Service emblem. Using the original patch as inspiration, the Redwood Creek patch shows the Sequoia trees of California as well as the wildlife and vegetation found in the California Redwoods.
While technically not official National Park Service insignia, the Ranger hat has become synonymous with the Park Rangers. In 1932, the National Park Service specified that Ranger hats were to have a “three-inch stiff brim,” a requirement which Disney Parks still values today when showcasing this costume. The Redwood Creek Challenge Trail hat is made of tan cane straw and has a 3- to 4-inch brim.
With the upcoming Disney California Adventure park expansion in 2012, there will be changes coming to this costume, including a change to the patch, but the costume will retain the look of the Park Ranger.

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail!
Lol! If you blow up the pic, you can read “Redwood Creek” on the hat. 🙂
Ha! The first thing that came to mind before reading the update was Redwood Creek, but the immediate second thing that came to mind was Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore and Humphrey the Bear! Do you remember that cartoon where Ranger Woodlore gets the bears to pick up all the litter with that catchy tune: “First you stick a rag, put it in the bag, (bomp bomp) then you bend your back, put it in the sack, (bomp bomp) that’s the way it’s done, it’s a lot of fun, (bomp bomp) cutting capers, putting papers in the bag.” And all the bears are bumping their behinds in sync with the tune! I hadn’t thought of that cartoon in decades until this latest uniform quiz, but I found it on YouTube! It’s called “In the Bag”.
