With the opening of New Fantasyland only a few months away, I’m beginning a series of articles to reveal merchandise we’ve created for this exciting area. I figured I’d start with Disney pins, which have been a part of major openings since the introduction of Disney Pin Trading in 1999. For New Fantasyland, the pin team created a variety of pins to collect, including open and limited edition pins, boxed sets, multi-pin sets, and some pins designed especially for Annual Passholders. Today, I’m highlighting just a handful of favorites.
New Fantasyland will officially open on December 6 at Magic Kingdom Park. On that day, we will release several limited edition pins that commemorate the grand openings of different experiences. The image above also shows the awesome opening day “I Was There” pin, featuring Belle.
People have often asked me which pins they should collect. I recommend pins that have a special meaning to the collector. I also suggest mystery sets, as they are a collection with an ending. Once you collect all the pins in a particular mystery set, you can focus on a different collection.
We are releasing a few different mystery sets for New Fantasyland. One set is a limited release and will feature pins inspired by the “Beauty and the Beast” experiences. Another is a limited release “reveal / conceal” set with 10 known pins featuring images from New Fantasyland. This set will also have 10 mystery pins. Each box contains one pin you can see, while the other pin is a mystery. Also look for a similar “reveal/conceal” set for The Barnstormer.
I like some of the pins created for Storybook Circus. The Dumbo-themed set contains one of my favorite images from the film – storks flying over Florida. Five of the eight Dumbo pins in this set will be sold individually, but the boxed set contains the complete collection. I was also happy to see Humphrey the Bear included in the five-pin character set (more Humphrey merchandise, please!).
Finally, to celebrate one of the largest expansions in Magic Kingdom Park’s history, we will have a super jumbo pin that will measure approximately six inches by five inches. Now that’s a pin!
Look for additional release details about these and other pins in the coming months on Disney.com/Pins.

Those look amazing! Will they only be available for purchase in the MK or will pin traders at DTD have them as well?
I wish I could go on the 6th. Sadly that is the last day of classes before finals week.
@Amy – Glad you like them. From my understanding, the pins will be released at Magic Kingdom. Yet the final release plan, etc. has not been finalized. Once we have all final details, we will share on http://www.Disney.com/Pins
@William – Best of luck on the finals 🙂
Cool! Any pins on the Seven Dwarfs mine train?
@Kirk – There is one pin in the reveal/conceal mystery set pictured above. Since the attraction won’t be opening this year, there hasn’t been much development for it yet.
Any idea at the cost of these pins and sets? I booked months ago and I seem to have gotten lucky. I will be down the 12/1-12/9.
These are amazing, my sister will LOVE them!!! Do you know yet if there will be any limited edtion pins on December 6 for the grand opening?
@Richard – Awesome that you will be in town! The area looks amazing and I hope you enjoy it. The retails and edition sizes vary for the pins. I would invite you to keep watching http://www.Disney.com/Pins in the coming months. Once we have the final release plan, we will share all details on that site.
@Corrie – Yes. The limited edition / limited release pins are currently planned for December 6. Yet we are still finalizing all release details. We have about 90 days until the opening so this is just a first look at some of the pins. 🙂
These really all look fantastic. Exciting times! Now if only I could get there to see it.
Thank you, I love all of these pins! To confirm the “I was there” pin will be released on the Grand Opening (December 6th)? Will any of the pins be released before the Grand Opening?
Also I wanted to thank you for your update on the orange bird hats. I went and bought a pair as soon as your post went up, I love them!
I’m not a pin collector AT ALL, but that train set is adorable. I may have to buy it and frame it.
@Ashley – At this point, we plan to release the limited edition / limited release pins for the grand opening. Yet we haven’t created the final release plan. Once we do, we’ll share on http://www.Disney.com/Pins . And glad you were able to get the Orange Bird hat; it’s wonderful!!
@Elizabeth – Agreed! That’s a great set; I love how they connect.
These pins are fantastic! Thanks so much, Steven! Will there be any special Vinylmations created for New Fantasyland? I’ve noticed most of my collecting budget seems to go to those now…
Thanks again!
@Nicole – At this point, we do not have any plans for Vinylmation from New Fantasyland.
Love the pins and SO glad I should be off the morning of Dec. 6! One question, though, what is up with Belle’s hair on the “I was there pin?” So different!
This is so absolutely amazing!! Beauty and the Beast is my favorite and I’ve been dying to see more Belle merchandise in the park! This sure hits the spot!
Do you have any advice on how to get one of the opening day pins? I’m hoping I’ll be in the parks when it happens, but I’m not sure how to go about finding one of the pins. Is it just if you happen to see a cast member wearing one?
@Alison – Happy to hear you liked them. The Disney Design Group artists are always creating some neat and unique designs. That’s probably why I love visiting their offices so often 🙂
@Jennifer – Just wait … more “Beauty and the Beast” items are coming. Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog. As for your question, the pins shown above are retail pins. We are currently finalizing the release plan, and will share all important details in the coming months on http://www.Disney.com/Pins
I am slightly disappointed in the pins. I only noticed ONE pin for The Little Mermaid! The Little Mermaid is one of my all time favorite Disney movies and with the new ride I figured there would be new merchandise. From what I can tell Ariel will be featured in two pins! 🙁
I am also disappointed with the lack of Ariel merchandise.
@Katie and Antonio – You will be quite happy to know there is an entire assortment (pins and more) coming for Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid. I purposely didn’t show the pins in this article becuase there will be an entire article dedicated to that merchandise.
These pins are amazing! Yet another reason I’m glad we rescheduled our trip to coincide with the Grand Opening. 🙂
I know that you don’t know details yet, but do you have a guess about the way that the pins will be sold? Will they be available in stores in MK on December 6th, or will you need a voucher or something to claim your right to buy one?
@Allie – Glad to hear you will be joining us for the opening. It would be unfair for me to guess as I’d prefer to give final and complete information. This article was designed to be a first look at merchandise since we haven’t discussed any prior to it. Based on my experience though, I know the operations, planning and event teams will try to make the release plan as great as possible for interested Guests.
I agree, more Humphrey (and Ranger Woodlore too)!
I agree with Katie and Antonio…It’s very disappointing to only see 2 Little Mermaid pins in the assortment you featured in today’s post. I understand that you were only featuring a sampling of pins being created for the New Fantasyland Grand Opening, but I had hoped to see more pins/pin sets/etc. featuring Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid and Ariel’s Grotto.
Steven, is there any information you can give us Little Mermaid fans to reassure us that this area of the expansion won’t be left out of all the pins and merchandise coming out for the grand opening? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@Lauren – I’m sorry for your disappointment. Here is what I can say about pins you are seeking. There will be a seven-pin set, a grand opening pin, another limited edition pin, an open edition pin and two Passholder exclusive pins (one is in a five-pin set) all themed to Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid. Ariel will also be included on the Disney Vacation Club member exclusive pin. And there will be many other “thingamabobs” coming for the attraction, like shirts, home items and more. 🙂 Please stay tuned as there will be an entire article focused on this attraction’s merchandise in the coming months.
We will be there on 12/6 and will make sure we get a couple of ‘I was there’ pins!
No Timothy the mouse with Dumbo. Dumbo couldn’t fly without him???
Why does Belle and Cinderella look so strange on these new items? I do not like the new look at all. Some things are classic and the princesses are classic. They should not be messed with.
I love the train set!
I will have to get most of these I am a HUGE Disney Pin collector and I like every thing about the Fantasyland Expansion.(Except that Mickey’s Toontown Fair and Snow White’s Scary Adventure closing) Other than that I LOVE the Fantasyland Expansion.
Are any of these pins going to be limited edition?
@Ryan – Yes. There will be several pins that are limited edition. You can see some of them in the lead image of the article. All the important details (retail, edition size, release location, release date) will be shared on http://www.Disney.com/Pins at a future date.
Steven…Thank you so much for responding to my comments regarding pins and merchandise representing the Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid attraction. I feel so much better now and cannot wait to read your article dedicated toward merchandise for this attraction when you post it in I hope the near future. Thanks again.
One of Pete’s Silly Sideshow has “Grand Opening 2012” on it, is this confirmation that it will be open with the rest of New Fantasyland on December 6th?
We will have to take time off work, but we will be there December 6th without a doubt! I must have these.
I am not a pin collector but I think that train collection is awesome. I’m with Elizabeth – I might have to buy it and frame it too! We get into Orlando on the 6th so we’ll miss the actual opening day but we will be there on the 7th. Good thing we are spending 2-1/2 days at the MK with all these new attractions to see.
My wife will be excited about the one with Belle reading a book – she has always been sad that there have been no Belle pins with her in her blue and white dress. They always show her in her yellow dress.
