New Pins to Collect or Trade Coming to Disney Parks in 2013

When I served as project manager for Disney Pin Trading, I was often asked by guests which pins they should collect or trade. My best advice for someone starting a Disney pin collection is to pick a certain theme and trade for what you like. For years, we have offered mini-collections that are an easy way to jump start a collection. I spoke with Jeanne Lewis, merchandiser for Disney pins, about some of these new collections arriving in 2013.

“We have new limited edition pin collections coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts next year,” explained Jeanne. “Some pins will be released each month, while others may be released every other month or once each quarter. I like these mini-collections because they have one consistent story. I also like making these pins extra special by adding different elements like stained glass or sculpted metal.”

Fans at Disneyland will see the next chapter of the “Piece of Disneyland Resort History” collection. For this series, Jeanne acquired costume pieces from the Creative Costuming team from various Audio-Animatronics figures. I like the “it’s a small world” pin that features pieces of the Japanese girl’s obi sash from the attraction’s final scene. Each pin in the series will have an edition size of 1,000.

The “Window to the Magic” collection is also coming to Disneyland Resort. This pin series features scenes from classic Disney animated films where magical things took place by windows. The pins in this series will have edition sizes of 1,000.

For Walt Disney World Resort, there will be a pin-of-the-month collection called “Good Luck / Bad Luck.” This playful collection shows there are two sides to every story – lucky and unlucky. I thought the Flower pin was funny (poor Flower!). The edition size for these pins will be 1,000.
Surprise Pin Collections Coming to Disney Parks in 2013

I convinced Jeanne to let me tease two new surprise pin collections for 2013. There will be six different pins in each collection, released at various dates throughout the year. The Walt Disney World Resort collection is called “Remember When” and gives a nod to classic Disney attractions and characters. The Disneyland Resort collection has images of vintage Disney characters in stylized crests. The surprise pins will each have an edition size of 750.

I invite you to keep watching Disney.com/Pins for the latest news about pin releases. Happy trading!

  • Those look awesome, but could you tell us a little more about the “Magical Manifestations” series? I guess I have an idea what they are about, but I’m not entirely sure 😉 I love the Djafar pin though.

    • @Sabrina – The “Magnificent Manifestations” series will feature a variety of Disney characters and their alter egos. For example, there will be a Pinocchio pin where the outside is him as a wooden puppet. When you lift the hinged element, you will see Pinocchio as a real boy.

  • Do you know when the Mister Toad’s Wild Ride pin will be available? Will it be available to purchase online? I really want that pin and want to make sure I know when it will be available.

    • @Shannon – The Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride pin is part of a collection of six surprise pin for Walt Disney World. Due to the “surprise” nature, I don’t have an exact date or location when the pin will be released. I know it is coming at some point in 2013. There are no plans to carry that pin via the online store. I would keep watch at http://www.DisneyPins.com for specific release information.

  • are the pins only going to be available in the parks or will they be available onlinefor purchasing? will there be special pins for annual pass holders or can everyone get these pins?

    • @Joseph – Typically, these pins are carried only in Disney Parks, either Disneyland or Walt Disney World depending upon the collection. There are times when some collections are carried via the online store, yet I don’t believe these pins will be sold on the online store.

As for Passholders, there is an entire separate collection of pins being released throughout the year for Passholders. You may also find some Passholder exclusive pins released for certain events like the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.

  • I’m always happy when Figment and Dreamfinder show up! The Good Luck/Bad Luck pins are very cute, too, though I have to admit that I’m a little jealous that WDW won’t be seeing those Windows pins.

  • oooo! That Aladdin pin! Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on that. My boyfriend is a huge Aladdin fan and we were having a hard time finding different Aladdin pins when we were visiting last year.

  • Could you please tell us when the first PTN will be for WDW. We are going to be going down to WDW in February. But we haven’t made set any dates, because we are waiting on the PTN date.

    Thanks!

  • Oh My Goodness!! I LOVE that Lady and the Tramp Pin!! I need it! I hope these will be available on line!

  • Can you buy the pins online, I have a family member who loves the small world?

  • FINALLY! I saw Mr. Toad! Will the Mr. Toad pin be available at Disneyland?

    • @Jason – The Mr. Toad pin will be a surprise pin released at some point in 2013 at Walt Disney World. Sorry. I do, however, love riding Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride when visiting Disneyland!

  • Just out of curiosity, what piece of Disneyland Little Mermaid was pieced up for history? Looks like Ariel’s wedding dress, but don’t remember what that was from.

    • @Eric – You are correct. It’s part of her wedding dress from the wedding scene near the end of the attraction.

  • I love the Disneyland history pin sets. Are they just going to be for Disneyland or will we see some Disney World history pins too? Non the less I want to collect them all!

    • @Samantha – There are no plans at this point for another Piece of Disney History collection at Walt Disney World. The series was actually introduced in Florida in January 2005 with the release of the now highly desireable “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” pin. Walt Disney World had a few different collections following that first one in 2005. In recent years, the Piece of Disney History collections have been only found at Disneyland Resort.

  • I NEED that Journey into Imagination pin in the worst way…… So adorable!!! Also might have to pick up that Orange Bird pin too…

  • Really exciting to see these new pins. I have 2 questions. First, like Eric, I was wondering what “Piece of Disneyland History” was part of the Little Mermaid pin? Is it part of Ariel’s wedding dress in the last scene of the ride?

Second, I am a bit confused about the “Remember When” collection for Walt Disney World. If one pin is released at a time throughout the year, what is surprise about them? Will we not know what pin is being released on the given dates? Thanks.

    • @Lauren – As you guessed, the pin will feature part of Ariel’s wedding dress from the attraction’s last scene.

The concept of surprise pins dates back to the very early days of Disney Pin Trading. The element of surprise is not knowing on what date or in what location the pin will be released. Typically, we don’t show the artwork for surprise pins. Yet, I loved the designs so much this year that I convinced Jeanne to let me show a few. How could I not show the Orange Bird?! 🙂

  • I would love to visit Disney/Pins, but Flash makes my browser crash. Any chance the blog will be revised without Flash?

    • @Douglas – Yes. Look for some additional enhancements to the overall DisneyPins.com site this year. Sorry for the trouble.

  • Totally would love to have the Figment and Dreamfinder pin! Maybe i’ll be able to pick it up personally if it’s released later in the yr. =D

  • I so have to have the Journey into Imagination pin… I really miss the old ride with the Dreamfinder. Any idea when it will be available? Will we be able to purchase them online??

    • @Jenny – I’ve been a fan of Journey Into Imagination since my first visit to EPCOT Center in July 1983. At this point, I don’t have a release date or release location for that pin. It’s a surprise pin so that information isn’t shared ahead of time. I know the pin won’t be sold via the Disney Parks online store.

  • I thought Pin Trading Nights were cancelled as there is no information about them online. When is the next event for WDW?

  • Hi Steven! Like many I get so excited to see the pin posts! I’m an avid pin trader that visits DL about 6-8 times a year. However, over the past 18 months my passion for pins has faded as every cast member lanyard is covered in the same pins….for several days in a row! Do cast members “refresh” their lanyards anymore like they used to? It’s not very exciting to see these pins when I know I have no hope of trading for them at the park. 🙁

  • Looking forward to the 2013 pin trading night series for Walt Disney World. Will there be a pin trading night in January?

  • Any info on the 2013 Hidden Mickeys?

    • @William – Funny as I’m actually working on that article this week. 🙂 There will be new pins for both Walt Disney World and Disneyland coming soon.

  • When can we expect to see 2013 Pin Trading Night schedule? And what about 2013 Hidden Mickey collection information?
    Inquiring minds must know!

    • @Hannah, Peter, Robyn, and Linda – I hope to have some additional information about the next Disney Trading Night for Walt Disney World soon. Please stay tuned.

  • I would love to see the piece of Disney history pins come back to Disney world, had a great time collecting the first 3 sets & Disney lands also.

  • Hello – when the WDW trade night is decided, where will the information be posted? thank you so much…always love the trade nights!
