One attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is celebrating a birthday this week – Voyage of the Little Mermaid, which opened on this very week in 1992.
The attraction is a 15-minute retelling of “The Little Mermaid” and features songs and appearances by all the beloved characters from the film, including Ariel, Prince Eric, Flounder, and Sebastian.

Our first viewing of this show was to escape an afternoon rain shower – luck was with us as we tucked into the show at the end of the crowd. Front row seats – I was worried we were too close, but no! What a delight it was – and we sat with big grins on our faces trying to figure out “how’d they do that?”
So yes, we do like to revisit!

We enjoy the show and I’am just wondering if their is any word on them removing it for some thing else now that Little Mermaid ride has opened in Magic Kingdom? I feel Hollywood Studios could us a few new things and some ride up dates. Even tho we enjoy the park.
The Voyage of the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast live on stage are my two favorite attractions in the studios. In my opinion they are the two best shows in the whole resort. I can’t even imagine not seeing them when we go!
I think Disney’s Hollywood Studios has GREAT live entertainment. I love Beauty & The Beast, too – great dancing!
We saw it when our kids were little, and again through out the years. Now I’m waiting to see it with my grandkids in two years. It’s short enough to keep the wee ones entertained and the adults from being bored.. that being said it could use a “new” look or some kind upgrade.
I’ve LOVED this show ever since I was a child. I go to see it everytime I’m in WDW, and I’m there a lot. I certainly hope that Mary Beth’s comment is wrong, and that the Voyage of the Little Mermaid stays in Hollywood Studios for many, many years to come. The show is so different from the new ride in Magic Kingdom, plus there are a lot of movies that have more than one attraction in WDW. Happy Birthday!!!
Ariel was my princess growing up and so The Voyage of the Little Mermaid is ALWAYS a must. My favorite is the descent into the ocean using the lights, it always gives me goosebumps!

This is such a CLASSIC attraction that so many people LOVE! There is nothing that could replace this show.
When the movie came out in theaters I was just a tiny child, maybe 5. I remember being so enchanted by the colors and the songs. I have only been to Hollywood Studious one time, and I can remember loving that show–it was so real to me. This year I became an Annual Passholder, and was able to visit the New Fantasyland and the new ride. I was misty-eyed, still enchanted after all these years. My sister and I are visiting the parks again Sunday, and we are making a special trip to Hollywood Studios to this attraction. I cannot wait to relive the magic again, this time through adult eyes!
I’ve always loved the show and see it every time I visit Studios, but I agree that it’s maybe time for some kind of upgrade… or maybe even a replacement, especially now that Mermaid has such an awesome presence at Magic Kingdom. I’d hate to see it go, but I’d look forward to whatever might eventually take it’s place!
We have enjoyed the performances dozens of times since it opened. I remember trying to figure out if Ariel was really singing or lip syncing. When we confirmed that it was a live performance we were even more impressed. The various performers in the role over the years have been stellar. Actress Leanza Cornett, Miss America 1993, being the most famous one. She was so great she could make you cry.
It’s an enduring show that should definitely stay. It always draws crowds and there are always young kids who are seeing it for the first time. We do miss the original show however. The shortened version that is done now doesn’t build enough anticipation for the finale. (Much like the new ride in Fantasyland.)
Since Ariel is my daughter’s favorite princess, this was at the top of our “must do” list during our visit in August. We enjoyed it so much, that we just had to see it again before leaving the park that day! Very well done.
My ex-girlfriend and I would love sneaking into this ride as a filler between attractions and we were always impressed at how “scary” certain parts could be for little children. Ursula’s majestic appearance and lighting effects make for interesting theatre.
