You may recall that Disney Design Group, the art department for Disney Theme Park Merchandise, introduced a series of uniquely designed posters for 2013. The entire poster collection is featured in an oversized calendar that offers artistic interpretations of this lucky year. (The Walt Disney World Resort version is currently available online.) Today, I turn the spotlight on the months of April, May and June. Graphic designer Tyler Dumas told me he was inspired by Disney Legend Mary Blair when he created April’s poster.
“The poster was inspired by [Mary Blair’s] beautiful use of color and geometric shapes,” explained Tyler. “I thought it would be interesting if the castle was constructed out of children’s wood building blocks. Some blocks develop a worn feel after years of play, so you have the bright colors with the texture of the wood coming through.”
For the May poster, senior production artist Betsy DePadova said she likes to doodle.
“I enjoy doodling,” said Betsy. “For this poster, I incorporated some ‘lucky’ icons from the 2013 dated program style guide into my design. I also added a few hidden characters and more that I hope guests enjoy finding.”
For the June poster, Natalie Kennedy added some personal touches to her Sorcerer Mickey-inspired design.
“I put my personal touch into the poster by incorporating my love for whimsical hand lettering,” said Natalie. “I wanted something simplistic so I used only two bold colors – cyan blue and black. I also included my signature stars, which added even more magic to the design.”
New pins and Vinylmation figures inspired by these posters will be released in the coming months. Tyler’s poster pin will be released on April 4 at Disneyland Resort and on April 5 at Walt Disney World Resort. His Vinylmation figure will be released on April 5 at both destinations. We also created D-Tech on Demand cases for the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5 using his design (notice the white bumper, which is something new). Look for the cases in select locations at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts. Please note that Disneyland Resort will only carry the iPhone 5 case for now.
Finally, I invite you to meet Tyler Dumas on April 5 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at D Street in Downtown Disney West Side.

Loving the new pins…
I’ve heard through the grape vine that Disney is discontinuing the Pin Trading Nights at Walt Disney World, and they we’re only going to have the Annual Pin Event in September. Can you shed any light on this?
@Mark – I spoke with the trading and merchandise events teams this afternoon. They continue to look for and available date and a location to hold another Disney Trading Night at Walt Disney World. I have not heard of any plans to discontinue trading nights. Once additional information is available, we will update our Disney Parks Merchandise website – http://www.DisneyParksMerchandise.com
I demand more phone cases with this bumper! it looks great!
Thank you!!! World of Disney, here we come. 🙂
All the designs are great, the June one in particular, as I have a soft spot for Sorcerer Mickey. Thanks for sharing.
I love the April poster by Tyler Dumas with the modern Mary Blair essence! Hope to snag a poster/calendar or other goodies on a trip to Orlando this year!
@Scott – Thank you for the comment.
@Jackie – Right on! You can currently find the Walt Disney World calendar on our Disney Parks online store: http://www.disneystore.com/walt-disney-world-poster-calendar-2013/mp/1327044/1000252/
I hope you have a safe and fun trip later this year.
Wendy, all of the posters come in a calendar that they sell at several stores in the parks, as well as World of Disney in Downtown Disney. You get 13 posters in all for about $20. It’s a great value!
Love the June poster–when and where can these be purchased? We will be in Disneyland in just days, but I assume only the April poster is available? Thanks!
@Wendy – You can find these images in the calendar that Scott mentions below. You can also find a giclée on our Disney Parks online store that features Tyler’s castle image:

Great designs, but why is Sleeping Beauty Castle used with the April WDW calendar?
@Nate – Interesting. I saw Tyler’s design as a nod to a Disney Parks castle in general, not specific to Disneyland or Walt Disney World.
