Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a Candy Maker at the Disneyland Resort? Our 2013 – 2014 Disneyland Resort Ambassador team (Megan Navarette and Sachiko White) did. For one day, they had the opportunity to spend time with our talented team of candy makers from around the Disneyland Resort and got a firsthand look and hands-on training on how to make an array of sumptuous treats, just for you!

Of course, I wanted to find out all the details and whom they got to shadow, and Sachiko was happy to share. “It was fantastic to shadow the Candy Makers and to try my hand at making a few confections because it really made me appreciate the skill, the Show element, and the science behind the sugar. I learned about tempering chocolate, that white chocolate is technically not chocolate at all, and that the Candy Makers are sometimes called upon to use their creativity to make new versions of the classics in order to please different palates.” Sachi went on to say, “We worked with Rob McHargue, who has created many of the recipes for confections that are a staple in our candy locations, Beau Bailey and Stefanie Roostapisheh from Candy Palace (I actually got to dip pineapple slices in dark chocolate. Yum!), and Alexis Acosta and Brian Odell from the candy kitchen in Disney California Adventure park where we made Cinnamon Candy Apples and Peanut Brittle. Needless to say, I was on a bit of a sugar high by the end of the day!”

What was Megan’s favorite part? “I loved seeing firsthand what the Candy Makers do to produce all of the delicious treats for our guests and how much of our candy is made in-house on a daily basis,” said Megan. “My favorite part was making the peanut brittle with Sachiko and Alexis, but it was hard not to get hungry while making it!”

Wondering if Megan and Sachi gave us a thumbs up on their candy making experience? They did!

All of this talk of candy made me wonder what other fun treats are coming our way. And there’s one person I know that has all the details on that – Michael Contreras (the prince of candy, as I like to call him)!

First up and #1 on my list … the gourmet apple s’more. An apple dipped in chocolate with graham crackers and marshmallows. Consider it gone! This just took making s’mores to a whole new level. Enjoy it fireside or just chilling out with family and friends. But remember you will only find it during the month of July.

“For Fourth of July, we made a few extra special items,” said Michael. “For those looking to add a little bit of Americana flavor to your palate, I would recommend our Fourth of July-inspired treats like our Red, White and Blue strawberries, cake pops and pretzel rods. Each have been coated in white chocolate, dusted in blue sanding sugar and are accented with red sugar and other white and blue nonpareil decorates.”

So sweet!
