We look for any excuse to order ice cream, and National Ice Cream Day (July 21) gave us a perfectly logical reason to do an ice cream tasting at the Disneyland Resort.
So here, in no particular order, are all the frozen concoctions that we just had to taste in honor of this special day. Do you have a favorite we need to try?
- For old-fashioned goodness, the cherry-flavored milkshake at Carnation Café on Main Street, U.S.A, in Disneyland park wins hands down. And we’re told it was Walt’s favorite.
- Also on Main Street, U.S.A., Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor has a trio of floats, each one better than the last: root beer, orange soda or a classic Coca-Cola float, each made with a double scoop of vanilla (and we love the Gibson Girl souvenir glass).
- Strolling over to Disney California Adventure park, the “Eye Scream Sundae” at Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream on Buena Vista Street is almost too cute to eat. Almost.
- And who can resist the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop at Disney California Adventure park, where the line-up of sweets would make it hard to choose – but we always order the same thing: The Gold Rush peanut butter hot fudge sundae. It’s the decadent melted peanut butter that does the trick.
- At the Downtown Disney District, we have a weakness for the cinnamon-sugar crusted deep-fried ice cream at Tortilla Jo’s – perfect after a spicy burrito. Who’s counting calories?
- We were surprised to find milkshakes on the dessert menu at Uva Bar and Café at the Downtown Disney District – and the S’Mores Homemade Ice Cream Milkshake is a must.
- Have a taste of authentic Italian gelato at La Brea Bakery Café at the Downtown Disney District? Chocolate, vanilla or a scoop made with fresh strawberries is a heaping serving of delicious.
- We had fun with the design-your-own ice cream sandwiches at PCH Grill at the Paradise Pier Hotel – pick a cookie and an ice cream flavor for your ideal sweet ending.
- After multiple courses at Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, we behave with the seasonal sorbets (sorbet counts as ice cream only if you’ve had multiple courses before dessert). Napa Rose makes their own ice cream, too.
- Last but not least, the Root Beer Baked Alaska at Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel is a must for root beer fans – a mini-root beer float paired with root beer ice cream topped golden meringue. Just two or three perfect bites, and you won’t want to share.

The Kitchen Sink at Beaches and Cream on the boardwalk!! Got to try it at least once!!!
At the gibson girl for your float get a “rainbow Punch” used the rainbow sherbert in place of the vanilla and add Sprite instead of the other sodas. (or go one scoop vanilla one scoop rainbow sherbert plus sprite) really refreshing on a hot summer day!

A family favorite of ours is the bananas Foster dessert at Ralph Brennans Jazz kitchen in downtown Disney. They flame the bananas tableside and put the sauce and bananas over some very delicious vanilla ice cream! It’s a wonderful treat!
Our favorite is the vanilla ice cream cone dipped in chocolate from The Cone Hotel at Cars land.
Don’t forget the Build your Sundae machine in Goofy’s Kitchen. Pick any item from the dessert table and make your own creation.
