Last month, we gave you the first glimpse inside the major refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland park. Today, I’m excited to show you our first video from behind the walls that surround the attraction. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens this fall with a new track – which you can see being installed in the video below.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment here on the Disney Parks Blog!

  • Hopefully still on track for an opening around my birthday (oct 30th) 😀

  • I can’t wait to see it the next time I’m on the West Coast…hoping soon!!

  • Yay! I can’t wait! it’s been the longest 10 months of my life waiting for this to open! haha so excited to see all the changes! and glad to see it hasn’t changed too much!

  • Hang on to them hats and glasses, cuz this here is the wildest ride in the wilderness! We miss you Big Thunder… We will look upon you longingly to ride as we pass you by next week when we are there!

  • Since my family is going to Disneyland for the first time in just a few weeks, I really wish I had checked the refurbishment schedule! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is my daughter’s favorite WDW ride and we’re so sad that we won’t be able to ride it at DLR. Guess we’ll just have to come back!! Thanks for this Erin. It’s always fun to see what goes on behind those walls!

  • Will be nice to see the “newly refurbished” section. Is it me, or is (was) this attraction quicker/faster than the WDW version at MK?

  • Erin, when was the last time Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was refurbished? I can’t recall.

    • Steven – Although the attraction has undergone regular maintenance over the years, this is the first refurbishment on this scale (completely new track and trains).

  • I can’t wait!! It’s one of my favorite rides!

  • I sincerely hope the new trains look like the old trains with engines in front with all their wheels. I’d hate to see a Matterhorn hitech vehicle on the tracks since the original BTM design goes all the way back to Mark Davis and George McGinnis in Natures Wonderland days. Paris Disneyland still has the fastest BTM and always will have with their track layout.

    • Not to worry – the trains will still look much the same when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens this fall.

  • Very excited for the ride to reopen and see all the reburbishments. Any chance of a “soft” opening for passholders? I have missed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

  • Looking forward to it, I just wish it wasn’t taking so long.
Do you think there will be any changes in the realm of hidden Mickeys?

  • Where is our interactive queue?

  • so where did they put the loop? 😉

    can’t wait for the re-opening 😀

  • When does it re-open?

  • will be 57 yrs old aug.16 and i still love disney!!!! disney is for the kid in all of us 🙂

  • Any idea when this ride will be open again this fall? We are coming mid October for the first time and this is a ride my husband and kids really wanted to go on.

  • I went to DL for the first time ever in June – and it was closed. I have a chance to go back the first week of October – and I am hearing it will still be closed. This is by far my favorite ride at MK so I wanted to try the DL version. Sigh.

  • I meant that BTMRR was closed, not DL

  • Erin, is there a better reopen date available then fall of 2013? My wife and I are booked for Halloween weekend and have seen reopen dates ranging from mid-late Oct, all the way too Jan of 2014. Really hoping for Big Thunder to be open.

  • Will it reopen in time for Halloween?

  • Erin, Any new updates on about when this might be up and running again?

  • I scheduled my Disneyland trip as late as I possibly could, and now I have Halloween Party tickets for OCT 21. Before I buy anymore tickets, I really need to know if BTMRR will be open.

  • Anyone know when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen?
