‘Frozen’ Attraction Coming to Epcot

When Walt Disney promised that Disneyland would never be completed, so long as there is imagination left in the world, he made a promise to our guests that we take seriously at all our locations around the world. This year, one particular product of imagination — Disney Animation’s blockbuster hit “Frozen” — captured the hearts and minds of people around the world and gave us a new opportunity to make good on Walt’s pledge.

We’ve made “Frozen” a part of the guest experience in a number of ways already and our guests have both loved them and asked for more. So I’m pleased to say that we’re starting construction at Walt Disney World Resort on a brand new “Frozen” attraction at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot. The new attraction, which replaces Maelstrom, will take our guests to Arendelle and immerse them in many of their favorite moments and music from the film. The pavilion will also include a royal greeting location where Anna and Elsa can meet our guests. We think these “Frozen” elements are great complements to the Norway Pavilion, which showcases the country and region that inspired the film.

“Frozen’s” popular characters will also have a bigger presence at Magic Kingdom Park this holiday season. In addition to the ongoing character appearances, Queen Elsa will use her powers to transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace every night starting in early November. And Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party-goers can see Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf in “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.”

We’re extending some favorite elements of Frozen Summer Fun LIVE!, too, so that guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios can continue singing along to “Frozen” songs with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna. Wandering Oaken’s will set up shop closer to the show through the holiday season and will feature a larger play area with real snow (in Florida!).

From the moment we screened the film several months before its release, we were inspired by the possibility of bringing this great story to life for our guests. Frozen Summer Fun LIVE! has been extremely popular, and now we’re looking forward to doing even more to allow our guests to experience the “Frozen” phenomenon.

  • I am so excited about this!! My boyfriend and I went to go see Frozen on our first date, so this movie is so special to us! We love that we get to be reminded of that every time we go to Disney!! 😀

  • When will Malestrom be shut down for this transformation? I have FastPasses for early November.

  • When do you expect construction to start (aka shutting down Maelstrom for good) ?

  • Sounds exciting! Tom, any idea when the Maelstrom will be closing? We are there in November and would love one last ride.

  • Is there an estimated date of completion? We will be there in February and would LOVE to experience this!

  • Any time frame announced as to when the Frozen ride is to be completed by?

  • this is interesting because of the integration of a movie and a country in the showcase. I know Remy in France is another example but to make a ride out of it like this is something to really get excited for because it simply hasnt been done. I hope in one sense that the world showcase remains what it has always been, a way to see the world, and doesnt lose that special attribute that it has. I know disney will make this work!

  • How soon do you anticipate Maelstrom being shut down for good to begin construction ? When will the Frozen attraction open ?

  • I will never be able to get my daughter out of the Magic Kingdom or Norway once these happen. She just can’t “let it go”!

Can’t wait for all the Frozen fun!!

  • Is there an estimated timeline for this? Would help a lot in booking our next trip.

  • ALL great news! Love living next to WDW!

  • When will Maelstrom be closing?

  • Will I still be able to do Mealstrom on my trip to Epcot in November, or is the attraction as of now closed???

  • Maelstrom is scheduled to shut down on 10/6.

  • We love Maelstrom and will lament its loss.

  • Will the ice skating rink be staying around? Will it remain in Hollywood Studios or be moved elsewhere?

  • Does this mean that the Sing-A-Long will continue at Hollywood Studios beyond the “end date” of September 28?

    • Yes, Katie — guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be able to continue singing along to their “Frozen” favorites beyond September 28 as we’re indefinitely extending this show.

  • I will be in Disney November 7 – 11. Do you know if the ice castle will be there for the party on November 10? What other Frozen fun will be there at this time?

    • Hi, Gabrielle, Queen Elsa will begin using her powers to transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace beginning November 5.

  • So happy this has been announced. Were at day 60 and have done all our fastpasses and now cant wait to experience Frozen at Hollywood Studios!!!!!

  • Maelstrom is one of my favorites!! So sad to see it go ://///

  • How long until it will reopen as a Frozen themed ride?

  • I am so excited can’t wait love Disney at Christmas time

  • Very excited to see a Frozen attraction coming soon. Any details on what it will be (is it still a boat ride of the same length?). Also, I’m curious on how the story of Norway will be represented in the attraction. World showcase to me has always been about portraying the background, culture and history of the country it represents. Even the updated boat ride in Mexico that introduced the Three Cabelleros kept the idea of visiting the actual Mexico as part of the storyline.

    • We’re excited for the Frozen attraction, too, Matthew. While we
don’t want to give away the whole show, we’re well aware that what
people love most about Frozen are its heartwarming story, the wonderful
characters the film brought to life, and the amazing music throughout
the film. The attraction is designed to let guests experience and
immerse themselves in all those key elements. And we think it’s a
natural fit to locate the Frozen attraction at Epcot’s Norway Pavilion,
which showcases the country that helped inspire the film.

  • Sounds like a wonderful time. I hope that the sing-along at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be running in early October.

  • As much as I enjoy Frozen I’m afraid the pavilion will lose some of it’s educational element by changing the ride. That won’t stop me from enjoying the Frozen ride ( whenever I can brave the mine train like wait times, that I’m sure it’ll have) but am sorry that I’ll miss the culture evident in the Maelstrom.

  • Great news! So does this mean the Frozen Sing-Along will continue through October as well, or just pick up again during the holiday season? If through October, when do you anticipate it being available to book in the FP+ system? Thank you!

  • I read somewhere that Maelstrom was closing on September 28. So disappointed it is going away. Just wish they were updating it.

  • When is the official closing date of the Maelstrom? My husband and I love the attraction and would like to bid it adieu.

Also, when is the ballpark of completion of the new attraction?

  • Are there any concept details other than it will take you to Arendelle? Will it be a boat ride or is there going to be a different format all together? How exciting!

  • I’m heartbroken.

  • Please let us know the last day of operation. I need to make sure my daughter gets one last ride. She loves Maelstrom. I will miss the old ride, but can’t wait to see the new one.

  • Is the Track layout going to be the same as Maelstrom?

  • So excited!!

  • Is this taking Maelstrom and re-designing the look of the ride or totally replacing the ride itself? As with everyone else, wondering when it starts and when it will be completed. Doubt it will be done by the time I will be down there in October/November time frame.

  • I read that Maelstrom is closing later this month. Please say it isn’t so. (I’m going down in mid-October and would love to see my favorite trolls one more time.) Do you have a timeline?

  • I am going to Disney in December, and would love to experience Malestrom one last time. When are they closing the ride?

  • Today is Maelstrom’s last day. 🙁

  • This is very exciting news for our family! I agree it would be very helpful if you could share a very rough ETA. This would be a deciding factor in planning our first family trip to Disney. Thank you!

  • Early word a few weeks ago was that 9/28/14 is the last day to ride maelstrom.

  • Can’t wait for all the Frozen fun!! And the Frozen the ride that will be awesome to ride it!

  • Bravo Disney! You are on the right track with this! You made the right decision and the timing is PERFECT! Cannot wait for this!

  • AHH!!! I’m so torn! I’m excited for the new ride but Maelstrom is my favorite EPCOT attraction!

  • Which Frozen Summer Fun features continue at Hollywood Studios, and will they be available October 13th?

  • I know you can’t get fp for October, last day they have been available is sept 28.

  • Super duper excited! Can’t wait!!!

  • Maelstrom is highlighted in blue, therefore it’s a link. It says the final day is October 5, 2014. I’ll miss that ride, but looking forward to “Frozen”.

  • really going to miss Maelstrom.

  • I would love to know the estimated date of completion as well. My granddaughter loves this movie and she will be visiting on her school breaks. I’m hoping that we will get to experience this together.

    • Thanks for asking, Cynthia. The Frozen attraction is targeted to open by early 2016.

  • I’m looking forward to seeing how they integrate Frozen and blend the fantasy and realism to stay true to the Norwegian people and their history! The Norway pavilion is such a great place!

  • Add me to the list wanting dates! Assuming it will be a re-dress of the existing ride with some new Imagineering “plussing” added. I hope they keep the educational elements about Norway’s amazing history!
