Disney Parks After Dark: The Mystery of the Chandelier Clock at Disneyland Park

Have you ever walked through Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park and looked up to see the stunning chandelier clock? If not, you are missing a real treat. Installed in 1996, the chandelier clock has never actually worked. Despite the theories and rumors, the numerous times that have been set on the clock have had no significance. Over the years, I have photographed the clock many times during the day. This time, I wanted to see how the clock would photograph at night. I think the beauty of the clock is more evident at night than during the day.

  • My favorite “explanation” is that it’s the time that the fairies put the castle to sleep, and the clock fell asleep too.

Still, it’s great to finally have the last word on the clock’s “backstory,” namely that there really is no backstory.

  • Finally! A blog post about one of the most pressing questions I’ve ever had about the park! And I’ll be honest, I’m happy with the answer… 🙂

  • I was told by a cast member that it was set to the time that Walt Disney passed away. Very interesting….

  • It’s probably just where the hands land after custodial cleans the clock. If each castmember left the clock at their time, you could tell who cleaned it last! Like if “Bob” always sets it for 8:00, you would know he cleaned it last if it still reads 8:00.
