Disney Days of Past: A Look Back at ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’

According to the Chinese zodiac, goats are believed to be gentle mind-mannered, shy, sympathetic, and amicable with a strong sense of kindheartedness and justice.

Sounds a lot like Djali, Esmeralda’s faithful sidekick goat, from Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Djali made an appearance (albeit in marionette form) in “Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame-A Musical Adventure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios” from 1996 through 2002.

So here’s to the goats in this world – fictional, animal and human. Happy Chinese New Year!

  • Outstanding show that is really missed! The juggler in the pre-show was great, too. Wish the show could be brought back somewhere at WDW!!

  • This was the most compelling live stage show Disney ever staged. I would love to see it come back. It was the best story, told with pathos. The best staging and choreography as well as the best effects. I’ve never understood why it closed and other shows that have grown tired continue. It’s time to resurrect the magic. Lord, help the outcasts!

  • Loved watching this show! Spent a summer selling sodas to the audience before the show.

  • My daughter loved it so much she attended the last show ever given, and then scooped up the ripped card Quasimodo tears when his heart becomes broken. She has it still this day. I wish the version performed in the La Jolla Playhouse last fall, and soon to play at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, would eventually make it to Broadway.

  • Best Show they ever had at MGM Studios/Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Fantastic Energetic Cast

  • Yeah, this was a good show. Definitely a must see at the time.

The theater is enclosed now and the Frozen Sing A Long is there. I was pleasantly surprised at how adult friendly they made the Frozen show, lots of little jokes for adults that the kids won’t get.

  • I concur with Heather, this was the best show!

  • Of all the stage shows at WDW, I think this one was the best, and I was sad when it closed. Belle and her dancing jello molds cannot compare to Quasi and his gargoyles.

  • Diane, the theater is still there, but it has been enclosed and is now used mostly for special events. I believe a Frozen show played there in late 2014.

  • This still ranks as my favorite Disney stage show! I miss it even today!

  • The photo is so blurry, could you upload it in clearer resolution? 🙂

  • Too bad they still do not have this theater at the park. Saw some great shows there. Saw this production on one of our trips and I have to say it was fantastic! A great way to promote the movie as well.

  • I loved this show and miss it dearly……….

  • This was always one of my favorite shows!
