We gave you a first look at Grizzly Peak Airfield, the expansion of Grizzly Peak at Disney California Adventure park, back in March. Today I’m excited to report that this newly reimagined area is now open!

Disneyland Resort Chief Photographer Paul Hiffmeyer ventured out in the rain yesterday to bring us these first looks at Grizzly Peak Airfield. Check out more in the gallery below.

Now let’s go behind-the-scenes of the development of this area with Walt Disney Imagineering!

Grizzly Peak Airfield, including Soarin’ Over California, is now open at Disney California Adventure park.

  • Love the new theming in this area, reminiscent of visits to forested western National Parks like Yosemite and Sequoia. The signage in the area looks fantastic, and the props and details in the stores and Smokejumpers Grill make for an amazing atmosphere.

Are there plans to update the interior queue of Soarin’ Over California as well? It appears that the inside of the attraction is still unchanged from the Condor Flats desert test pilot theme.

  • Thomas– I think the reason why they did not make references to “Planes: Fire & Rescue” is because the Planes movies take place in the “Cars” universe, and the “Cars” universe is already represented in Cars Land. So, any references to “Planes” characters would only make sense in Cars Land, it would be a contradiction of theme if the “Planes: Fire & Rescue” world was represented in Grizzly Peak.

However, there are still “Planes: Fire & Rescue” toys in Humphrey’s Service & Supplies. 🙂

  • Why didn’t you use anything from Planes Fire & Rescue?

  • AHH! I love the national parks, the era of vintage travel, and Humphrey and Ranger Woodlore. This all looks amazing and I can’t wait to see it in person! Fantastic job!

  • Wow, it looks fantastic! Will Humphrey the Bear merchandise be sold at Humphrey’s?

    • Steve – Check out Michelle’s post here for a look at what is available at Humphrey’s Service & Supplies.

  • Wow, this looks beautiful! I honestly remember previously thinking, “I hope Condor Flats becomes part of the Grizzly Peak area someday…” I’m glad the imagineers had the same idea (but better than I could have ever envisioned it in my head)!

Will the Soarin’ Over California building get a larger sign over the doorway, like I think i saw in some of the early concept art? I can imagine some guests walking right past without realizing the wonders inside that building, especially since it’s now painted sort-of like that “go-away green” that’s usually used for backstage areas (and for the door to Club 33).

  • Erin, is there any plans to change the disneyland flyover in the film? I remember them filming something last year…
