Shortly after Disneyland park opened its gates, Casey Jr. Circus Train “came down the track” for the first time on July 31, 1955.
The Fantasyland attraction, based on the classic Disney animated film “Dumbo,” features animal cages and ornate sleighs which take guests full steam ahead on fanciful train ride.
As you can see, a simple scenery surrounded the attraction until the miniature scenes of Storybook Land were added with the opening of the Storybook Land Canal Boats in 1956.
Casey Jr. Circus Train continues to delight guests (monkeys and wild animals too!) from around the world. “All aboard! Let’s go!”

I love that when it’s going uphill you can hear Casey, Jr. saying, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.” if you listen very carefully. To many it just sounds like the steam of the engine chugging uphill, but listen closely for the fun hidden secret!
Why, in the happiest place on earth, doesn’t Casey smile any more? Compared to the old photos, he kinda looks apathetic. Bring back the smile!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
That’s awesome. A lot of history associated with the Circus Train. Thanks for sharing the classic pictures George!
Love Casey Jr – try to ride it whenever I am at the park. It gives a great different perspective to the Storybook Land scenes below, to be able to see an entire scene from above, I once snapped a great picture from the train, of the Pinocchio scene with the Matterhorn rising above behind, it looked as if the Matterhorn was part of the scene. That’s all part of the Disney magic!
