We have some exciting news to share today. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek just unveiled plans for Toy Story Land, to be built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort. The new land, inspired by the “Toy Story” film franchise, will allow guests to shrink to the size of a toy and explore the world of Andy’s backyard.

According to Imagineer Kathy Mangum, Toy Story Land was inspired by the overwhelming guest response to Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort.

“As all of you know, here in Anaheim, we’ve been quite successful with taking immersive experiences to a whole new level as we did with Cars Land. In fact, one of our favorite stories from opening day is that we overheard a little boy asking his mom, ‘Is this where they filmed the Cars movie?'” Kathy said. “That’s exactly how we want people to feel – like they’ve stepped onto the set of their favorite film … like the quaint town of Radiator Springs or, in the case of ‘Toy Story,’ the wild and adventurous outdoors of Andy’s backyard.”

When Toy Story Land opens at the park, guests will be able to play with some of their favorite toys at two new attractions that will be unique to the Walt Disney World Resort, plus one expanded favorite:

  • Family-friendly roller coaster – Guests board Slinky Dog’s back for a thrilling toy-filled coaster adventure that’s ideal for the entire family.
  • Alien saucers attraction – The famous little green aliens from the movie will take guests around for a spin in their very own flying saucers – but beware The Claw!
  • Toy Story Mania! – This current guest-favorite attraction, which allows guests to take aim at 3D objects in into the Toy Story Midway Games Play Set, will expand with more midway track that takes you into the world under Andy’s bed where he’s built a carnival-style midway.

  • I’m very excited to hear that both Toy Story Land and Star Wars land will coming to both Disney World and Disney Land. Me and my children really love all of the Pixar movies. A number of years I got to experience with my children The Monster’s Inc. ride at Disney land!!

  • So the new third track at Midway Mania will be a different experience from the current 2 tracks? The announcement mentions “under Andys bed”.

  • My son’s first words were literally Toy Story, Toy Story were the very first words he learned to write after his name. Still today he must wear an article of clothing on a daily basis that is Toy Story related. I cannot explain the connection. The Toy Story characters are without a doubt members of our family. We’re going to be counting the days! As a mother I could not be more excited for this event. This will be the highlight of both of our lives. THANK YOU!

  • This is FANTASTIC!!!! My children and I are soooo excited! We are wondering if you could answer a very, very, very important question—WILL THERE BE A PIZZA PLANET IN TOY STORY LAND?!!!! 🙂

  • What is happening to one man’s dream. I truly hope this will be put back.

  • Will there be a toy story themed restaurant?

  • I am soooo excited about this. As a die hard Disney fan and visiter to the park at least once a year. I LOVE NEW STUFF!!!!
    Looking forward to more details!

  • I will say, at first, I was a little bit disappointed that this was just Toy Story themed and not overall Pixar themed, even though I *love* Toy Story…but if this new land has half the charm and theming of Cars Land and A Bug’s Land at Disney California Adventure, I’m sure the naysayers will be pretty quiet pretty quick.

Kid-themed or not, I was blown away by how detailed everything in A Bug’s Land was, and I enjoyed walking through it for the hidden gems and inside jokes in the details even though it wasn’t geared toward grown-ups. Radiator Springs made me tear up, and Cars isn’t even my favorite of the Pixar films. The line for Midway Mania is already one of my favorite spots for how detailed everything is. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the Imagineers have to bring to the table here.

  • I’m happy to hear about all the new attractions planned for the Studios. One question for you; any chance that the drawing classes will return to the Animation Studio? Even better, an expanded drawing class that can hold more ‘artists’? It was always fun to take a break from the lines and hot sun to show off what a bad cartoonist I am! Those classes were getting more and more popular when the plug got pulled.

  • I don’t know if I’d call the slinky coaster “unique” to Disney World, it already exists in Disneyland Paris! I rode it on vacation last year. But I’m excited to see it and the Playland brought a little closer to home.

  • Great news. I love Hollywood Studios. Adding both Toy Story land & Star Wars land will make it just that much better. Can’t wait.

    • Me, too!

  • @James – Yes, I was disappointed too that they were focusing JUST on Toy Story than on the whole world of Pixar, especially when Pixar was having its best year (with a non-Toy Story film).

One of the appeals of the Studios was getting to see the new movies and their characters referenced, and with the Animation building gone, is there anywhere in the New Studios plans that we’ll be able to interact with the fresh new WDFA/Pixar characters who don’t happen to be Star Wars, princesses, Junior, or Buzz & Woody?
(Not just Joy & Sadness, but where are Hiro and Baymax going to build their lab, where are the Incredibles going to hang out with Ralph & Vanellope, and where will Minnie have her dressing room?)

  • Initially I was disappointed to hear it’s based on just Toy Story rather than an extended Pixar Place which could feature attractions from other Pixar films. But the comparison to Cars Land changed my mind. Probably the best thing about Cars Land is how immersive it is. It really feels like you’re in Radiator Springs! By focusing on one franchise it allows the imagineers to create that immersive feeling. An expanded Pixar Place with attractions from different franchises would feel more disjointed. Can’t wait to see Toys Land!

  • I agree with Todd from IL, such a missed opportunity

  • Yes! Good news about Toy Story 4 and now Toy Story Land. I hope the movie and expansion will be done around the same time.

    • There will be a LOT to look forward to over the next few years.

  • Great news! I´m sure it will be as amazing as the Toy Story Playland at Disneyland Paris!

    • I’m happy you’re excited!

  • Omg sooooo excited to hear this I love toy story.. I am so upset didn’t make it to Disney this year, so hearing of new things makes me happy that when I do return there will be so much more new things to see and enjoy..

  • James’ wife here – So much fun to be had. I can’t keep up with all this exciting news for Hollywood Studios – Toys Story expansion and Star Wars, UNREAL! This is all such AMAZING news!

    <3WDW!

    • James’ wife – I’m so happy you’re excited.

  • Toy Story Land sounds fun until you review the details and realize it’s just a well-themed kiddie playland. What a disappointment. Hong Kong gets Mystic Manor, Paris gets Ratatouille, Shanghai and Tokyo get a host of mind-blowing experiences, Anaheim gets Radiator Springs Racers, … and Florida gets a slinky dog kiddie coaster. With the initial idea of a true Pixar Place already planted, it is sad the WDW team is once again settling for average. Such a missed opportunity.

  • I sure hope the ride vehicles on the slinky dog coaster are roomier than the ones on Seven Dwarves Mine Train.

  • So excited!Toy Story and Star Wars are two of my favorite movies, and they are both getting so much love, I can’t wait!!!

    • Yes, I LOVE the Toy Story franchise. Should be a ton of fun when it opens.

  • Any information as to where this will be in the park, and what is being replaced? But, overall, I think the idea is great and looking forward to finding out more about it as it progresses!

  • I want to ask if the people behind making this decision come to light have read some of the comments on theme park fan sites such as Orlando Parks News or Theme Park Insider. It seems a lot of fans(myself included) of the Disney parks are upset about this because we were hoping for something along the lines of an expanded Pixar Place rather than choosing Toy Story as the solitary film(franchise) to base an entire land after. At least with a general Pixar theme, there could be attractions based around other beloved Pixar films such as The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Up, Wall-E, etc. The New Fantasyland expansion at the Magic Kingdom is a perfect example of what fans were hoping for at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with an expanded Pixar Place. Since construction hasn’t started yet, I strongly hope you read those comments on those other sites and understand how a lot of hardcore Disney fans are very disappointed by this announcement.

  • Marlise I know back when it was just heavy speculation that we were getting Toy Story Land (or a Clone of Cars Land) that it was to take over where Lights Motor Action is + the former Backlot…though take that with a grain of salt

  • Will Toy Story Mania be closed during these renovations? So exciting!!

  • Should be interesting!

I’m also very curious where this is going to be built. If the building right above the words Toy Story in the pic is either the existing or extended TSMM, it would appear like maybe this takes the place of the previously closed Back-lot Tour and also the Lights Motors Action show.

It does look somewhat large, hopefully Streets of America and Muppets won’t be affected. With the announcement of 14 acres of Star Wars land as well, it’s starting to seem like we may lose some of these areas for these 2 expansions though(and as much as I don’t want to see those go, it would make sense for this new land to run right up to the existing Pizza Planet).

    It’s going to be interesting!

    • No word on this. We’ll share an update when we can.

  • Oh yay!!!!! We can’t wait! Have they announced anticipated opening dates? Years? That roller coaster looks amazing! Love the concepts.

  • I’m a little confused as there seems to be conflicting information depending on where you read about the announcement-is the current track going to be extended or is an additional track being added?

    • An additional (third track) will be added.

  • Great news! More excited for this than Star Wars land!

    • I’m happy you’re happy, Pat!

  • Can’t wait. Was hoping for Cars or even better Star Wars but I will take Toy Story.

    • Toy Story Land will be fabulous! Our Imagineers will out-do our expectations for sure.

  • Slinky Dog roller coaster! Assume this is building out in back of TSM and into the area of the former Backstage Tour and Catastrophe Canyon?

  • What great news from Disney. I am excited to see Toy Story Land. Will it be completed by summer of 2017?

    • Whenever we have an opening date to share, we’ll let you know. Stay tuned.

  • Great news! Where in the park will these attractions be located?( Star Wars and toy story)
What is closing to make room?

    • As soon as we know, we’ll share it here.
