If you’re a regular Disney Parks Blog reader, you know that Pirates of the Caribbean at Walt Disney World Resort has been closed for work as part of our tradition of maintaining beloved classic attractions for current and future generations of guests. Today, we’re thrilled to share that the attraction has reopened.

In addition to the restoration work and new paint inside the attraction, we added some enhanced special effects, including new cannons with water-based smoke and strobes for weather effects. There are also a handful of new scents to experience at different areas of the attraction.

We also took the opportunity to enhance the Audio Animatronic figures in this fan-favorite attraction at Magic Kingdom Park. Each character was rebuilt and fitted with new costumes and now appear even more realistic and authentic, including Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa.

You can now experience the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction – with added magic – for yourself at the Walt Disney World Resort. Do you remember the first time you rode Pirates? Let us know in the comments section.

  • I first visited POTC at DL in 1976 and WDW in 2010.

  • We were there yesterday and Pirates of the Caribbean was shut down for a couple hours during the morning, but it was back open while we were eating lunch at the Tortuga Tavern. We’ve got fast passes for Friday, so hopefully they get the bugs worked out.

  • I am so excited to see the updates for Pirates! I remember the first time I rode it; back in 2000, on our first trip I went on the ride. Pirates always freaks me out and I’m easily startled while walking down to the boats and during the ride. I’ve always thought there should be more smoke and atmospheric effects for the ride! Can’t wait to get back and ride it!!!

  • I remember riding it for the first time in 2013! I was terrified going down that not so terrifying drop, and then amazed at everything seen around me! Such a great ride… can’t wait to get back on it in December!!

  • We first visited the ride when it opened in 1973 and it,s still a favorite after all these years. It,s “timeless”!!!!!!

  • We were able to rider Friday night for the MNSSHP!!! It made my night!!! I love that rise and was sad that it wouldn’t be open for us. But they surprised us!!! Absolutely loved everything new and old about it. Just love the ride period.

  • Sooooo happy the ride is open, Sorry to hear the trains will not be running thou the week my family will be there. It can be such a life saver at the end of the day to be able to ride back to the entrance. Can’t wait for the Halloween Party! Love the Sanderson Sisters!! May have to check for Fastpasses opening up for this one!!

  • Great timing! It closed days after my last trip and reopens days before my next. This sounds like the update I was hoping for when they first added Captain Jack. As with the Haunted Mansion, I don’t mind the addition of modern technology as long as the heart of the attraction remains intact. Any changes being made to the queue?

  • Since the first trip when my kids were little, this ride has been a sort of “family pilgrimage” each time I get to WDW. I have been waiting for it to reopen and am excited about going back sometime next week.

  • Each time we visit, it is like re-experiencing the ride for first time!
Our first visit was in 1984 and it is a MUST-RIDE every time!
I recently saw on TCM and old film “The Spanish Main” and it made me think that Walt Disney was inspired by the scenery for this ride!
Not only is it a super fun ride, it cools you off really well too!
…animatronics? You mean they aren’t real cast members? LOL AWESOME cannot wait!
    <3 WDW!

  • I’m so excited to see this attraction. I haven’t been on it since Captain Jack and Barbossa have been added. Being from Australia I don’t get to the parks that often, but when I have I’ve been at Disneyland for Halloween and the Pirates ride is always under renovation. But, next year I will be visiting both Disneyland and Disney World so I will finally be able to see the updated ride. I still have very fond memories of the ride as I just loved the scope and mood. When I first went on it in 1987 is was my favourite ride. I remember going on it again and again. In ’87 I went to Disneyland and Disney World and I know that I rode this ride the most. I have visited several times since ’87, but I will always remember the first time I went of Pirates. I was in awe of how realistic it was and how excited I was at seeing scene after scene. It’s a classic and will always be in my top 10 of rides.

  • Did they add a bayou, second drop and restaurant? While we look forward to seeing the enhancements in early October, it’s the top attraction on our which is the better version game. Thanks for the great update and we are excited to visit regardless of coast.

  • What I remember more than my first ride on Pirates of the Caribbean, is being terrified of it when I was little! 🙂 I would sit outside with my mom, while my dad and brothers rode. It is now one of my favorite WDW attractions. I can’t wait to ride it this October!

  • This is going to be incredible and I’m gonna be there start of October.
    Can’t wait for this 🙂
