Disney Parks Best Bites: March 2016

Spring is in the air at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts! The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is in full swing at Walt Disney World Resort and the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival is days away. Lots of exciting things are happening with Disney Parks Food & Beverage, so let’s get into the March edition of Best Bites.

Malasadas from Oasis Bar and Grill Teriyaki Burger from Oasis Bar and Grill Smoked Cheddar Grits from The Smiling Crocodile

Oasis Bar & Grill has opened, serving Polynesian-inspired menus to guests of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Tasty snacks like Malasadas (a Portuguese confection coated in sugar) and delicious entrees like a Teryaki-glazed Angus Chuck Burger, Spinach and Watermelon Salad with Grilled Chicken and Grilled Sustainable Fish Tacos are served poolside. There’s also a full bar offering a wide range of tropical cocktails, Hawaiian beer, wine, sodas and teas.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, many of the kiosks have gotten new names and a few new menu items. We love the Smoked Cheddar Grits with pulled pork and bread-and-butter pickles from The Smiling Crocodile.

Also at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, some tasty new menu items have been added to Flame Tree Barbecue. Look for a Full Rack of St. Louis Ribs, a Roasted Chicken with Mixed Greens Salad, a delicious salad with pecans, apple wedges and cheddar, a Ribs, Chicken and Pulled Pork Sampler entrée served with jalapeno cornbread, slow-baked beans and coleslaw in addition to a new side—French Fries with Pulled Pork and Cheese.

  • Flame Tree is one of our favorite QS restaurants at WDW. We especially love sitting at the tables on the edge of the lake. With the not-yet-announced Rivers of Light dining packages rumored to include Flame Tree, can we expect this area to be blocked off, reserved for only dining package purchasers, when we visit in June, or will it remain open to all as before?

  • On the section about the AK Kiosks, is there any special items rolling out for the April 22 opening of Rivers of Light? Can you share schedules and par hours? Right now it shows the standard early closing which doesn’t match up with all the announced nighttime fun.

  • Is there any information on a Tusker House dining package for the new Rivers of Light? Fingers crossed that information is coming sooner than we get there!

  • We’ll be at WDW in 3 weeks. As vegetarians, we look for places that serve a few non-meat options. The buffets at Crystal Palace and Tusker House are good, Chefs de France has a great mac and cheese and vegetable lasagna and the Italian restaurants are always helpful and accommodating. We especially like Tutto Italia and Mama Melrose.
This article is disappointing- just one non-meat option specified, a salad at Flame Tree. We do find good things to eat, but it would be helpful to have vegetarian options given a bit more attention.

    • My mom is a vegetarian and loves coming to visit (and eat at) Walt Disney World Resort too! Some favorites from her most recent trip were the Rice Noodle Bowl with Tofu and Curried Vegetable Crew Stew at Jungle Skipper Canteen in Magic Kingdom. A visit to Boma – Flavors of Africa and Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge are also on her must-do list every visit! As for quick-service, we love the Lighthouse Sandwich at Columbia Harbor House in Magic Kingdom with tomato and broccoli slaw and the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich from Rosie’s All-American Cafe at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you’re looking for lounge-fare, I highly recommend the Tanis Tacos (falafel, shredded lettuce and cucumber-tomato salad) from Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. I hope you enjoy your upcoming visit!

  • Rachel, thanks for your response. We also love the Lighthouse sandwich and they have a good vegetarian chili at the Columbia Harbour House as well. I should also mention that we stay at the Port Orleans Riverside resort and they have an excellent design-your-own pasta bar.
We appreciate your help and can’t wait to be back again- our second visit this year.

  • These are all delicious restaurants! I can’t wait to try them all!
