Disney Parks After Dark: The Iconic Matterhorn Mountain After Sunset at Disneyland Park

Guests of all ages have come to love and appreciate one of the icons of Disneyland park, the Matterhorn mountain, whose slopes are magically covered with snow every day of the year.

I’ve admired the mountain’s splendor even before I started my career with Disney. I remember visiting Disneyland as a teenager in the 1960s, when I overheard a woman who was admiring the snow-covered Matterhorn telling her friend, “Isn’t it amazing how Mr. Disney keeps snow on the Matterhorn all year long?” Without hesitating, her friend replied, “Yes, it sure is!”

This story is one of the reasons I love my job as a photographer here. On many occasions I have overhead similar conversations from guests who see the wonders of Disneyland through the eyes of a child, no matter what age they are. With the anniversary of the Matterhorn Bobsleds’ opening coming up June 14, it’s my pleasure to share three of my favorite photos of the Matterhorn with you.

  • Hi Scott, it looks like they took that pic a ways down the sidewalk of “Fantasia Gardens”, where the Motor Boat Cruise used to be, behind the “chalet” that sells food or things with names on them, or whatever’s there currently!

Great photos, Paul! Thanks for sharing them with us!

  • Few things in life are a sublime as the sight of the Matterhorn rising out of the Tomorowland lagoon. Beautiful photographs! If only the skyway still sailed through the mighty mountain.

  • Great photos! Matterhorn will always be my favorite attraction. That submarine photo should be framed next to my attraction poster

  • First off, AMAZING pictures! All three! For the very first picture, at the top of this article (the one with the monorail to the left and a sitting area to the right).. Where were you when you got this shot? I cannot seem to pinpoint where you stood…and I want to make sure I find that spot next time I go to DLR! Thanks in advance.

    • Good question. I took the first photo from the covered patio area behind Edelweiss Snacks in Fantasyland. To find the area, head toward “it’s a small world” and as you walk past Storybook Land Canal Boats, look for it on the right side.
