We just shared some exciting news that Tron – our highest-rated attraction at Shanghai Disneyland – is coming to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida!

The new Tron attraction will sit in an entirely new area right next to the Space Mountain attraction at Magic Kingdom Park. Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, made the announcement during the Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts presentation at D23 Expo 2017.

Regular Disney Parks Blog readers know that the TRON Lightcycle Power Run attraction at Shanghai Disneyland is a coaster-style attraction where riders board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles. It offers access into the energy, lights and excitement of TRON’s high-tech universe and is one of the most thrilling adventures at any Disney park.

Also, during today’s presentation, Bob said the plan is to open the Tron attraction in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021.

Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for more updates on this future attraction.

  • @ Rebecca, The Carousel of Progress will remain untouched and is actually on the opposite side behind the Lunching Pad and the Peoplemover, whereas The Speedway is back onto your way into Fantasyland and the Circus. (It’s supposedly going behind the Speedway and Space Mountain. Construction has already been beginning.) Rest assured, it’ll remain untouched and unharmed. However, it has been updated! If you haven’t been this year I’d recommend coming and checking out the updates!

  • This should be epic. Because it is in an unused area, the classics should not be bothered.

  • Yes, they told us that they are keeping the Speedway!!! The only problem is that they need to make the seats for larger people such as myself. So they don’t make that mistake like they did on Flight of Passage in Avatar!!! Please take that into consideration Disney!!!

  • May this be a sign that the 3rd installment in the series is coming to add to the hype of the new Tron ride?! If so….FINALLY!!!

  • I am so excited about this ride. As a child, I saw the original Tron movie and thought how cool would it be to be inside the game. Now Disney is making that dream come true.

  • Out of all the updates to the parks (other than Galaxy’s Edge) I am most excited about Tron coming to North America. I’m a huge Tron fan and think the films are fantastic. The music and esthetics will help bring Tomorrowland truly into the future. The fact that they found a way to bring Tron in without losing the Speedway, TTA, or having to heavily re-route the train speaks volumes. Disney truly wants to keep the beloved classics as long as they can. I’m just hoping they finally create a movie tie-in with a third Tron film. 2021 can’t get here soon enough.

  • What about Disneyland? Will Disneyland get this attraction as well? Disneyland was forgotten at the Expo and some of these new attractions would be welcomed at Disneyland.

  • From the picture, I don’t have a good sense of where this is in relation to carousel of progress. Will the carousel be ok? It’s my favorite attraction. I know it’s old, and that last scene could use an update, but I love it and I really hope it doesn’t go away.

Also, I LOVE Tron! I’m confused as to why they put a roller coaster behind a roller coaster instead of putting this in futureworld and having pre and post-show areas about programming, IT, and computer hardware, but I’ll take a Tron ride anywhere I can get one.

  • This looks like it will go on top of the Smoking Section behind the Speedway. Where we used to cut from Toontown Fair to Tomorrowland.

Love the People Mover, so hope it will not be changed.

Not very familiar with Tron. Assume it has to do with the ’80’s Jeff Bridges film.

    Forgive my ignorance.

  • @ Joe – The speedway seems to be o.k.; the railroad, on the other hand, goes right through there.

  • If they are going to do all of this effort, they need to make the next Tron movie (or that could be the plan to make it and release it just before this ride goes operational?). Flynn Lives!!

  • 2021?!?!?! a bit sooner please….

  • if this rendering is accurate, then they’ll be rearranging the layout of Tomorrowland Speedway…the area where the Tron ride is and its walkway is sitting in this rendering is where a large part of the Speedway currently resides. Looks cool…

  • I hope this new ride will be “fluffy” friendly. Unlike the new Avatar ride at the Animal Kingdom.

  • It looks great!! Wonderful to see Disney World get more coasters!! Keep up the good work with new, fun rides and it keeps us coming back!

  • So Autopia survives?

  • Keeping both the speedway and TTA? This looks like a HUGE Plus to the MK. Amazing ride without removing classic Attractions. Very good!
