Today we commemorate 63 years since the opening day of Disneyland. When Walt Disney opened Disneyland on July 17, 1955, it had 18 attractions and the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle nestled in the heart of his original theme park. With more than six decades of inspiration and innovation, the resort may have expanded, however, its heart has remained the same. To herald the occasion, we offer you 63 seconds of Sleeping Beauty Castle through the last 63 years. Enjoy!
What is your favorite Disneyland memory?
My favorite Disneyland memory was the time I visited the park with my other half, Dalito, on Memorial Day for the park’s Diamond Anniversary. We were standing in line with thousands of people at about 2:00am, waiting for the park to open at 6:00am. The zig-zagging line starts to rapidly move to get inside The Esplanade about 4:00am, when a man in the queue starts waving a piece of clothing in the air and yelling, “DID ANYONE LOSE THEIR CHIP’N DALE PAJAMAS?” I hadn’t realized that I had dropped mine in the rush to get inside the park. OMG! THEY WERE MINE!!! What were the odds that morning, that in total darkness and among thousands of people, I would see this man and even hear him?? They are my favorite pajama bottoms and it was true Disney Magic that I was reunited with them, and that someone was honest enough to try and find their owner. I’ll never forget that moment!
My favorite memory is spending the evening at Disneyland with my brother and my mom, then walking over to ride Soarin’ Over California at California Adventure and hearing The Beach Boys music play in the esplanade and California Adventure and then leaving and getting Beignets.
Attending the 24-hour day for Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary. What an amazing experience! I never expected anything like I experienced. It was Magical! I was so happy to be able to share it with My Other Half, Chipito! So many special memories! Thank you, Walt, for everything you did to create such a wonderful place for people from everywhere and every culture to visit.
Walking in and hearing the upbeat, and happy music playing.
Sleepy Beauty Castle? I always thought it was Sleeping Beauty’s Castle…
