Embark on Exciting Expeditions in Astoria, Oregon with Disney Cruise Line

During the Sept. 10 cruise aboard the Disney Wonder from Vancouver, Canada, Disney cruisers will have the chance to experience the enchanting history and rich culture of Astoria, Oregon for the first time ever! Nestled on the banks of the Columbia River and Youngs Bay, this town is the nation’s oldest settlement west of the Rockies and the site of Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark camped out after the completion of their fabled expedition to reach the Pacific.

From history and landmarks to active adventures to local culture and arts, we’ve hand-picked a spectacular selection of Port Adventures to give our guests access to the area’s best sites and attractions. Here are some of my favorites experiences awaiting Disney cruise families in Astoria:

Flowers in front of Mount St. Helens

Our most adventurous guests will love an excursion to Mount St. Helens National Monument, where you can explore the fascinating remnants of the volcano’s 1980 eruption. After discovering the science and beauty of the area’s craters, lava dome and blast zone, you’ll head to a gorgeous mountain vista for a relaxing picnic-style lunch with stunning views.

The scenic ride to and from the ship along the Columbia River offers even more breathtaking scenery, as well as riveting ties to the legendary travels of Lewis and Clark.

Scenic view of Astoria, Oregon from atop the Astoria Column

During the Historic Astoria and Fort Clatsop Port Adventure, you’ll visit iconic local landmarks and step into a scene straight from one of history’s most famous expeditions. Your first stop will be the towering Astoria Column for a chance to ascend the winding, 164-step staircase to the top of the structure, where you will be rewarded with unparalleled panoramic views of Astoria, the Pacific Ocean and the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range.

Next, you’ll head to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park for a tour of Fort Clatsop, a replica of the acclaimed explorers’ winter lodgings, where you can get a “first-hand” account of the famed tale from historical reenactors. A stop at the Columbia River Maritime Museum on Astoria’s waterfront caps the day with a deep-dive into one of most extensive collections of nautical artifacts on the West Coast.

We also have some shorter Port Adventures available for those who’d like to combine a one-of-a-kind experience with some free time to explore the city on their own. During the Create Your Own Glassblowing Masterpiece tour, you not only get to go behind-the-scenes at the Fernhill Glass Studio to learn about the ancient craft of glassblowing… you even get to help create your own unique souvenir! And our resident film fans will get a kick out of Filmed in Astoria, which takes you to local landmarks you may recognize from favorite Hollywood classics.

Keep an eye out for more Port Adventure highlights from our fall itineraries in the coming weeks, and remember, when the ship’s in port, venture ashore!
