We’ve got some exciting news to share today with the galaxy. We’re opening Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Dec. 5 at Walt Disney World Resort. If this date sounds familiar, many of our fans will recognize it as Walt Disney’s birthday. What better way to honor the ultimate storyteller than by introducing the most immersive and advanced attraction ever imagined in a Disney Park.

When it opens, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will blur the lines between fantasy and reality and will put guests in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Guests will be recruited to join Rey and General Organa at a secret base. Along the way, they will be captured by a First Order Star Destroyer. With the help of some heroes of the Resistance, they break out and must escape the Star Destroyer, protect the secret base, and stay one step ahead of Kylo Ren.

As soon as work is completed at Walt Disney World, Imagineers will head back to California to complete their mission at Disneyland Resort where Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will open on Friday, Jan. 17.

Between now and then, we’ll have lots more to share about this immersive, multi-platform experience so keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for updates.

  • Awesome! Are you guys opening HS early than what is listed? MDE currently lists HS @ 8AM (instead of 9AM).

  • Disappointed that WDW even though their Galaxy’s Edge opened later then Disneyland’s will get it first by a month and Imagineering is here in California. It’s also such a weird corner at the moment where the ride is to be.
But looking forward to see what is in store in this new style ride and can’t wait to ride it here at Disneyland.
The smugglers run is a good ride but there is still little things I think that need to be tweaked to make it perfect.

  • I’m praying that a Disney Christmas miracle will happen and it will be open over the holidays at Disneyland, I was looking forward to this ride so much! Please Disney magic, make it open in time!!!

  • Looks like a great ride. Excited to experience it! However, I’m super disappointed. The previous information given was that it would be open at DLR in the fall 2019, then WDW in 2020. Planned a trip to DLR this December expecting that this would be open. I know it wasn’t a guarantee, but this new timeline is completely different than what was previously communicated.

  • This is so great! WDW opens the ride on Dec 5!!! Yupi! I can’t wait to ride it

  • Was hoping it would be opening for thanksgiving week for our son’s senior trip, bummer.

  • From the renderings, this seems very similar to the Pirates ride in Shanghai — easily the single best theme park attraction in the world. CAN’T WAIT! And I’m so happy with the way Disney shared the love between California and Florida, allowing each to have a unique debut of different parts of Galaxy’s Edge first.

  • Nooooooooo we leave on dec 2nd

  • I read two different new articles that said this ride is not opening in till next year. Then I just read this article on on Disney’s web site that said it’s opening on jan. but with now year to back it up. So is it Jan. of this year or next year please?

  • Sooo disappointed. We planned our big trip to Disney based on the fact they said Rise of the resistance would be open before the end of the year. Our boys are huge Star Wars fans and riding all the attractions was super important to them. Opening the attraction right after holiday season is such a terrible idea, especially after it had been said it would be open before the end of the year. Really disappointed Disney.

  • Will it be reservation based access only during the Grand Opening of the ride?

  • It’s fair they’re letting Disney World have the ride open there first. Galaxy’s Edge at WDW isn’t opening until October so it makes it equal this ride opens their earlier!

  • Very disappointed. Planned a trip to DLR based on the information that it would be open before the end of the year.

  • I’m here still waiting for news of a WDW-AP preview.

  • Happy for an opening date. But bummed that the Calif version is not opening sooner and that WDW gets it first? Weird.

  • They are purposely opening it in January because thats the “slow” season and they want people to come to the parks!

  • Finally, we have a date! Guess I better start planning my trip. To all other people who commented, I guess the difference of dates and the WDW opening sooner than Disneyland’s is a well-thought strategy to bump attendance. Disneyland relies more on the Seasonal Pass and local people, which may have blackout dates near Christmas and New Year, and Orlando has a lot of tourists on those dates, so it’ll be nice for them to have it open by then. I don’t think the attraction was delayed or is having problems, I just think they needed to buffer the chaos and amount of people for the opening of Disneyland’s SWGE and treat it as a drill or testing phase for what’s to come.

  • Will this be available for Fast Pass bookings from day 1 in WDW ?

  • Not gonna lie, I’m a little disappointed that the California version is not opening this year, and that it will be opening later than WDW. Still, I’m glad that a date has been announced.

  • This is bizarre. So they abandoned work on the DL version to work on the WDW version?

  • Weird to me that the DLR version is opening after the WDW version. Like, why open the land 3 months earlier, but finish it a month later?

  • Will that poster of the attraction be available anywhere? Looks good, can’t wait!

  • Friday January 17, 2020..is that a special day in Disney history too?
And why would the Imagineers need to “head back to California” to complete their mission 6 months after Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge opened? seems odd…..

  • Can you send me a hard copy of that Rise of the Resistance poster (or tell me where I can get one)? It is VERY nicely done!

  • Happy to hear this – we will be there in time!

  • I. CAN’T. WAIT.
My NYE trip can’t get any better <3

  • Well, this is a bummer. The land right now is just OK and was hoping that it was going to open before the Christmas season.
