One of our most beloved Disneyland Resort attractions, Haunted Mansion, is celebrating its 50th anniversary today.

Did you know that the designers of the attraction originally wanted to make the outside of the mansion look scary? Walt Disney, however, wanted to keep the outside looking like a stately mansion, while letting the ghosts take care of the inside.

How well do you know this attraction? Put your fan knowledge to the test below!

  • I agree. The first question is entirely correct since Walt did have some input into this attraction before he passed. Also, The Mellomen were the group that recorded the voices of the singing busts, but they were called the Phantom Five for the attraction.

  • The Phantom Five are NOT the singing busts. They’re called the Mellomen. Also, the first question is debateable. Walt was involved with the creation of the Haunted Mansion, but passed before the ride was finished.

  • True, The Haunted Mansion is Walt’s. He wanted a the mansion to look well maintained. Not a run down haunted house.

  • Walt WAS involved with the creation of the haunted mansion but he died before it’s implementation into the park. There is video supporting this claim.

  • Given I just watched 2 videos where one shows Walt showing the HM model placement in the parks, and another where he vetoed some dedigns because he wanted the outside pristine, the first question isn’t 100% accurate. But a fun short quiz nonetheless.

  • Just because he died before the final vision was realized, doesn’t mean that Walt didn’t oversee any of the development. It’s a poorly worded question.

  • I read that the above pictured animatronic (Caretaker) was originally intended to be a Cast Member, as it is the only LIVING being in the Mansion. Instead, this animatronic was chosen!
