Wildlife Wednesday: Playing with Pumpkins

It’s almost Halloween, and that means it’s time for one of our animals’ (and our guests’) favorite enrichment experiences – playing with pumpkins!

Enrichment, which can include time with toys, exploring different scents and tasting special, edible treats, is a key part of our animal care program. It enables the animals to make choices about their environment and encourages natural behaviors. They might eat the pumpkins, smash them or even roll them around for a while.

It’s fun for members of our animal care team too, who enjoy getting creative in decorating the pumpkins and coming up with new additions, like bugs, seasonings and other tasty treats to encourage foraging.

Are you visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park this week? If so, keep your eyes peeled for some surprise and delight pumpkin playtime in many of the animal environments throughout the park, now through Halloween. The fun’s in full swing on Thursday, Oct. 31 at The Seas with Nemo & Friends at Epcot, too.
