When Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opens at the Disneyland Resort one week from today, you will be able to ride one of the most ambitious, advanced and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering. Already open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, this epic adventure blurs the lines between fantasy and reality on a scale never seen before in a Disney attraction.

Inside look at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Disneyland Resort

Here are seven ways to make the most out of your visit to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and planning tips for the highly anticipated opening of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance on Jan. 17 at Disneyland park:

1. Download the official Disneyland mobile app

First things first. The Disneyland app* allows you to navigate that land and even utilize the mobile ordering feature at select dining locations when you are in the land. Be sure to download before you go!

2. Plan around your attraction experience

Starting Jan. 17 as needed, a virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance may be implemented to help deliver the best possible guest experience, allowing guests to explore other areas of the park while waiting for their turn to ride. The Disneyland app will have a dedicated module, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – Access by Boarding Group, available from the main page. Here’s how it will work:

  • Request to join a boarding group to ride the attraction, once you have entered Disneyland park. The virtual queue will not be available until published park opening hours.
  • Boarding groups will be sent a push notification when it is their turn to enter the attraction queue and you can monitor status of boarding groups from the app.
  • There also will be the ability to join a boarding group from select locations inside Disneyland park, if you are not using the app. The boarding group is tied to admission that will be scanned upon entry of the attraction.
  • Signage throughout the park will also display boarding group status.
  • Admission into Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will be subject to capacity, and having an assigned boarding group will not guarantee entrance to the attraction.

3. Make a reservation for select experiences

Whether you’re looking to craft your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, build your very own custom astromech droid unit at Droid Depot, or sip on a delicious concoction at Oga’s Cantina, these three locations offer advance reservations up to 60 days in advance. These popular experiences book up quickly, so be sure to check out the Disneyland Resort website or the Disneyland app to make your reservations today!

4. Display your affiliation with the rebellious Resistance or the intimidating First Order

You’re encouraged to live out your Star Wars story and dress the part while visiting Batuu, however, keep in mind the Disneyland Resort costume policy is in effect. While costumes may not be worn by guests 14 years of age or older, appropriate bounding—dressing in outfits inspired by Star Wars—is permitted.

5. Find a buddy to ride with you

Head to Batuu’s marketplace to check out the Creature Stall. You may find an exotic creature or critter from around the galaxy to accompany you aboard Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, including a sassy Kowakian monkey-lizard or an adorable porg!

6. Explore Black Spire Outpost with your Star Wars: Datapad through the Play Disney Parks App

If you’ve traveled to Batuu, you may be familiar with the Star Wars: Datapad, a land-wide interactive experience available through the Play Disney Parks mobile app.* There are so many ways to explore with your Datapad, including choosing to support the Resistance or First Order by selecting new jobs within the app as you move through the Resistance clearing and towards the new attraction.

7. Follow the experience with a refreshing treat

After escaping the clutches of the dark side, treat yourself to a local delicacy in Batuu – Blue Milk and Green Milk! Available at the Milk Stand, these frosty confections are an invigorating, refreshing drink. Pair your milk with a sweet, savory snack made with popcorn from Kat Saka’s Kettle. Try the new chocolate popcorn with Crait Red Salt – yum!

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opens Jan. 17 at the Disneyland Resort. Rising Moons!

  • Does this mean that you will not be able to join the virtual queue once you past the entrance if the park has not opened?

For people getting in line at 4am and are moved into the park after 7am will not be able to do the queue until the park officially opens at 8am?

    • Correct. The virtual queue will be available at scheduled park opening times. On January 17, Disneyland Park is scheduled to open at 8 a.m., so the virtual queue will be available at 8 a.m.

  • @Scott, I believe so. I believe this is how it is being done in FL too. If park opens at 8am, you cannot attempt to get the pass until 8am.

  • What time does the parking structure open that day? Any special hours due to the ride opening?

  • How early will guests be allowed to park at the resort?

  • How does this work regarding magic hours? Will Disney hotel guests get to join a boarding group at 7 for those mornings where Disneyland has magic hours?

  • How will this work for extra magic hour for hotel guests?

  • @Scott and @Liz –

    I had the same question.

While I realize that I cannot request a boarding pass until I am scanned in AND the park officially opens (“rope drop’), entering the park by way of Magic Morning (MM) does seem to have one benefit…

A MM appears to eliminate the need to get to the park super early and potentially wait in a very long line to get scanned in. MM “should” ensure I was scanned in and in the park when the park officially opens and therefore I’d be as ready as one can be to start requesting a boarding pass once the park officially opens.

Perhaps I am over-thinking all this but I would hate to be at the end of the long line when the park opens and by the time I got scanned in, all the boarding passes were gone. Not to mention I am sure my kids (and truth be told myself) would not be thrilled to get up at 4 AM to wait in line for several hours with the chance we might not get a boarding pass.

Staying on property at the end of the month so I will find out if this works for myself.

  • Can any guest get on a boarding group with the Disneyland app or do you have to have a maxpass to do this

    • Any guests using the Disneyland app can visit the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – Access by Boarding Group screen after entering Disneyland Park to request to be assigned a boarding group. Guests not using the Disneyland app can visit select FASTPASS distribution locations inside Disneyland Park to request to be assigned a boarding group.

  • Has the app been updated to better run on non-Apple devices? I’ve had multiple problems (can’t make reservations – fastpass or dining) using the app on busy days because it, so I have been told by several castmembers, runs better on Apple.

  • @emily – I don’t think so. They way I read it and how I believe it works in FL as well is You will be able to get in early but the boarding pass opens when the park actually opens to all guests.

  • Are you able to join a boarding group in DCA or do you have to be in Disneyland?

  • What happens for resort guests on days that early entry is at California Adventure? Do they have to leave DCA early enough to wade through the crowds to enter Disneyland park by 8 (and thus lose most of the benefit of their early entry day at DCA)? Or will there be a way for those guests to join from DCA at 8?

  • What time do the parking structures open on Saturday January 18? Thank you.

  • How much time will guests have to report to the attraction once their boarding group is called? (I believe it is two hours at WDW.)

  • Will the single rider line be open and available?

    • No, we are not offering a single rider line at this time.

  • Thanks for the information, Michael! I noticed that on the day I’m planning to go, the park opens to the public at 8am, but will open at 7am for Magic Hour guests. Does this mean boarding groups will start getting distributed at 7am or will it not start until 8am when the park has opened to the rest of the public?

  • I was in Orlando on opening weekend. Best. Ride. Ever. Make sure you have the app version 5.6 or later, enable push notifications, and have your tickets linked. (Those were the directions we received at the hotel.) Once we passed the turnstiles, everyone was on the app getting their boarding groups. Boarding groups were gone in about 2 hours after guests were allowed in. Good luck everyone!

  • Is there a limit to the amount of people in a party that can request the same boarding group? I tend to travel with groups of 4 to 6 people and am wondering if we can join together or need separate boarding passes.

    • You can request a boarding group for any members of your party who have entered the park.

  • Does the whole group have to be there to reserve a spot or can one person reserve for the group?

    • Only guests who have entered the park may request a boarding group.

  • Who decides what “appropriate bounding” is? What does that even mean?

“While costumes may not be worn by guests 14 years of age or older, appropriate bounding—dressing in outfits inspired by Star Wars—is permitted.

  • Can a group of 6 (with children) be a part of the same boarding group? Meaning if I have the app with all 6 tickets registered, can I sign them in when the queue goes live? Thank you

    • You can request a boarding group for any members of your party who have entered the park.

  • How’s does the DAS system play in this?

    • Guests who use DAS will still need to request to be part of the virtual queue when it is in use, and receive a boarding pass in addition to acquiring their DAS pass. Please see a guest relations cast member for additional assistance.

  • Does anyone know if they will offer rider switch for this? Similar to how they do the fast pass system when you have young children who can’t ride?

  • What time will the Mickey & Friends parking structure open on 1/17?

  • Just wondering what guests at on property hotels are supposed to do? Do we enter Disney California Adventure at 7am for magic hour. Can we join boarding groups from DCA at Disneyland opening times? Or do we skip out on Magic mornings to go wait in the line that will form in front of Disneyland?

  • Is there going to be a dedication ceremony for Disneyland’s version of the ride like there was at Hollywood Studios?

  • Is this %100??? “The virtual queue will be available at scheduled park opening times. On January 17, Disneyland Park is scheduled to open at 8 a.m”

  • Can’t wait for for the opening day at Disneyland on Friday

  • What time will parking open on Friday Jan 17th?

  • Sooo is anyone going to reply to the multiple inquiries about parking on the 17th? Being that it is going to be a high demand day and many guests will want to arrive even earlier than normal, what parking options do we have?

  • How early is the parking structure opening?
How soon are you allowed to line up outside the main gate?

  • What time will Mickey & Friends parking structure open on January 17, 2020?

  • What time will all parking lots open?

    • Toy Story Parking Lot will be open at midnight and guests will be directed accordingly.

  • What if you have reservations for something at 8 am and the line to get in is backed up? Will there be a separate entrance for those with reservations? Or do you have to get there at 5 am with little ones to get in on time?

  • What time do the parking lots open on Saturday the 18th? Thank you.

  • How long will boarding passes be required? We will be going on the 12th for Disney after dark and will we need one then?

  • will Disneyland open early on 1-18-20 like on the grand opening

  • I’m am hoping we can still get clarification on whether you can reserve a boarding group from California Adventure, since extra magic hours are offered there during my upcoming visit. Do you have to be checked into Disneyland proper for the boarding group sign ups or will either park count as “being there” if you’ve got a park hopper?

  • If you have a park hopper ticket or an annual passport, can you still scan into Disney California Adventure later in the day? Like if I am able to scan into Disneyland and get a boarding group, will going to the other park cancel my boarding group number? I want to go to both parks on the same day, but if my boarding group doesn’t get called until late at night, I don’t want to be stuck in Disneyland. How will this work?

  • Hi. It will not work if you’re in DCA, so make sure you’re scanned into Disneyland.

  • Can you go to Disney California Adventure’s Magic Morning and once both parks open request a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance or Do you need to be in the Disneyland Park to join a group?

  • Is there a rider switch for this ride? We have one child who will not be tall enough to go and both of the adults would like to go, but one needs to stay with our younger child. How does this work with boarding passes?
