When I think about my favorite parts of my childhood, I remember family reunions and road trips, my favorite movie/TV characters, and especially the toys I played with the most. I remember climbing all over the McDonald’s PlayPlace jungle gym and even remember my first visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park (ironically, it was when McDonald’s sponsored the DINOSAUR attraction there!). Those were spaces that I always had fun with my family and friends, and perhaps like you, they have always inspired a sense of nostalgia when I return to them.
That nostalgia for the things we loved as children is a big part of what brings us back to the brands we cherish as adults. While writing this article, I got so excited re-discovering the Happy Meal Toys with Disney characters from the latest films and celebrations in our Disney Parks throughout the years. My great-grandmother collected all of the toys and I played with them every time we visited with her!
You may remember McDonald’s first collection of special edition Walt Disney World 50th Happy Meal Toys from 2021. Highlighting fifty of our most beloved characters backdropped with lenticular images of the four parks, these toys were a popular keepsake for the celebration from McDonald’s, who has collaborated with Disney for decades.
As we continue our celebration of 50 years of magic during the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary, McDonald’s latest Happy Meal Toys are a fun and collectible addition to commemorate the anniversary. The collection features Mickey and Friends posed in vehicles from a few of our favorite attractions across property. And as a special surprise, select toys have golden accents in their design! I got a golden one! But and asked the clerk about it NO ONE knew in my mcdonalds!! So now my kids lost their chance at seeing Disney land! Not fair at all!
I do remember my favorite Happy Meal toys featuring Disney characters, the VHS clamshell box series from the nineties. I also remember these toys from 2020. The Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway series. Oh, and also from 2021 when they were reissued toward the end of the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary McDonald’s Happy Meal run. Only, those runs both included the entire set of 10 cars to be connected into a train. Where are the Mickey/Tower of Terror and Minnie/Pirates of the Caribbean toys? Would be great if the set were complete considering it is technically in its third year run. Seeing these toys at McDonald’s again is more surprising than the “surprise” splotch of gold paint added to a few. I remember when the Disney name invoked imagination and innovation. Walt Disney preferred moving forward with new ideas and with good reason.
