The sound of freedom echoed throughout Magic Kingdom as U.S. Air Force jets rocketed over Cinderella Castle in honor of Independence Day. Disney welcomed this inspiring display of patriotism as we celebrated both America’s birthday and the military service members who protect the nation.
The Air Force showcased their capabilities with two incredible flyovers over Magic Kingdom as part of their national outreach program. A squadron of elite F-35 stealth fighter jets raced across the sky over the Castle, accompanied by thunderous jet noise above and patriotic music on the ground below. A special moment during Disney’s 4th of July celebrations.
What is a Stratotanker?
The timing of the flyover was special as Disney marks its 100th anniversary this year and the U.S. Air Force celebrates 100 years of aerial refueling capabilities. To mark their centennial of this mission, an Air Force KC-135 “Stratotanker” took part in the flyover. The KC-135 is a large tanker aircraft that can carry up to seven tons of fuel and acts as an aerial gas station for the Air Force. This impressive aircraft enhances the Air Force’s capability to accomplish its primary mission of global reach.
“Flyovers are such a spectacular show of air power and freedom,” said Katie Spencer, aerial events for U.S. Air Force Public Affairs in the Pentagon. “You feel the jet noise in your soul, and it inspires the next generation of patriotism. A touch of magic for the most magical place.”
Home away from home
Among those looking skyward during the flyover, alongside Pilot Minnie Mouse and Pilot Goofy, was Air Force veteran, George Denby, general manager of the Orlando Fisher House, one of 95+ comfort homes across the United States built by the Fisher House Foundation. Military and veterans’ families can stay at the Orlando Fisher House at no cost while a loved one is receiving medical treatment at the Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona. Disney has been honored to participate in many VoluntEARS activities in support of the Fisher House over the years.
“There is no greater way to celebrate America’s birthday and those who protect it, than this flyover over Magic Kingdom,” said George. “Thanks to Disney for hosting this salute to those who do so much to protect our country on this special day.”
Heroes Work Here
Watching the flyover was special for cast member Max Tubbs, a senior recruiter for Disney Internships and a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant who joined Disney as part of the company’s Heroes Work Here Program. Max helps college applicants find their dream internship at Disney, and for him, watching his two worlds come together was inspirational.
“As an Air Force veteran watching this flyover here at Magic Kingdom is amazing,” said Max. “I am so happy to be part of a company that is continuously honoring those who are part of the military, especially during my favorite holiday which is Independence Day.”
Strike up the Band
Disneyland Resort is also celebrating the 4th of July and military service as they host several military bands playing patriotic music across the resort throughout the holiday. Among them were members of the 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton who performed at the Paradise Gardens Bandstand at Disney California Adventure Park.
