Disney Parks After Dark: Thirty Years and Growing at Epcot

Late yesterday afternoon, I sought to make a photograph of Spaceship Earth to help celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of the opening of Epcot. Having photographed this dramatic structure since its construction phase, I struggled with the challenge to come up with something new.

As I casually strolled through the area, I was struck by how beautiful this stately grove of Washingtonia palm trees appeared, gently swaying in the breeze and contrasting so dramatically with the sleek, smooth surfaces of the Epcot icon.

I call this my “Future World Forest”… Happy birthday, Epcot!

  • Megan- Thank you for your comments. I know that quite a few folks have inquired about desktop wallpapers, but I do not believe that any have been made available yet. I will try to get a definitive answer and get back to you. Thanks again.

  • Beautiful!

  • Disney Parks After Dark is one of my favorite columns and this photo is by far the best!

  • Hi Gene~ I love your photographs! Are any of them available as desktop wallpapers or screensavers? I would certainly love to see some of these images on my computer scren every day! Thanks for the inspiration.

  • I remember back before Illuminations, around ’90 or so, when old-school Epcot had their big World lake show much earlier in the evening (7:30?)–
And the best kept secret with fans was that, like Illuminations, most day guests used the show for their finale, and left afterwards…And that if you stayed in the park till 9-10pm closing, you’d have the park “to yourself” for the rest of the evening, with more than half or two-thirds of the guests gone.
No lines on Horizons or Body Wars or Spaceship Earth, and the Future World lights more magical without the crowds. Like having Extra Magic Hours every night, only more relaxed. 🙂

  • That is an amazing and inspiring picture. It inspires me to start planning my next WDW trip!! 🙂
