Disneyland Resort Chefs Cook Up Tasty Vegetarian Dishes

“But, where can I find vegetarian?” We’re often asked this question, and following a recent visit to the Disneyland Resort, the answer is a resounding, “Everywhere!”

And we don’t mean just table-service restaurants, or fruit and nuts from the street carts. Frankly, we even consider pasta a bit of a creativity cop-out unless it’s really delicious.

So, here, in no particular order, are some of the best-tasting vegetarian dishes we discovered at the Disneyland Resort:

Huevos Rancheros at Carnation Café at Disneyland Park

  • If you choose to have eggs with your breakfast, we think the kitchen at Ariel’s Grotto in Disney California Adventure park does an admirable job with the tofu scramble, with sautéed seasonal veggies giving the protein a kick (and we added a vegetarian sausage pattie on the side). For a Tex-Mex start to the day, it’s the huevos rancheros at Carnation Café at Disneyland park, a filling meal with corn tortillas, poached eggs, Jack cheese and fire-roasted salsa topped with avocado-black bean pico de gallo. Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa goes lighter with a fluffy California omelet with diced plum tomatoes, fresh basil and baby spinach.

Portobello Philly dog at Award Wieners at Disney California Adventure Park

  • Little bites: two of our favorites were the chile lime corn at Edelweiss Snacks in Disneyland park, a fresh ear of corn tossed in lime juice, chili powder, cayenne and cumin; and the Portobello Philly dog at Award Wieners at Disney California Adventure park with grilled portobellos and onion and bell peppers sautéed in hefeweizen beer and topped with pepper jack cheese.

Veggie-Tater Bake at Flo’s V-8 Cafe at Disney California Adventure Park

  • A meal in a bowl: the veggie-tater bake at Flo’s V-8 Cafe at Disney California Adventure park is a hearty mix that includes delish soy crumbles and melted cheese on top for a dish that tastes decadent but is full of good stuff. And it’s hard to resist the corn chowder at the French Market Restaurant in Disneyland park, served in a freshly baked sourdough boule.
  • South of the border faves: Rancho del Zocalo in Disneyland park has plenty of choices – soft tacos, burritos and enchiladas that all can be made meat-free. But the generous Caesar salad is our favorite, topped with roasted pepitas and cotija cheese. Sticking with Mexican, we like the chilaquiles at Plaza Inn, with kicky enchilada sauce and Monterey Jack and Cheddar cheeses. At Disney California Adventure park, we favor the substantial veggie burrito at Cocina Cucamonga.
  • Meat-free sandwiches: The fried green tomato sandwich at Hungry Bear Restaurant in Disneyland park has plenty of fans who recommend it – what’s not to love, with hot fried green tomatoes, Havarti cheese, remoulade and a side of jicama-mango slaw? We didn’t miss the ham in the Three-Cheese Monte Cristo at Café Orleans in Disneyland park, with Swiss, mozzarella and double-crème Brie standing in. And over at Disney California Adventure park, the roasted veggie panini at Wine Country Trattoria was a winner – a filling stack of zucchini, eggplant, red peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and a lemon-goat cheese spread on a multigrain panini.

Spinach and Ricotta Agnolotti at Ariel’s Grotto at Disney California Adventure Park

  • Honorable mention: We did find a couple of pastas worthy of inclusion – the spinach and ricotta agnolotti at Ariel’s Grotto, with mushroom broth and topped with sautéed spinach, asparagus, onions and sun-dried tomatoes. And whatever pasta is on the menu at Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge at Disney California Adventure park or Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa – it changes often, but you can’t go wrong.

Do you have a favorite vegetarian dish at Disneyland Resort?

Comments

  • Wow this all looks and sounds yummy finding vegetarian (good vegetarian that is) is almost imposable to find in WDW every where you its either a veggie burger or Salad blehh :p

  • Pam, I’ve heard that the slaw served with the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich has Worcestershire sauce as part of the dressing and one of Worcestershire sauce’s main ingredients is ground up anchovies.

Also, traditional Ceaser dressing is made with Worcestershire sauce (but not sure if this would be the case at Disneyland).

Is there a way to confirm if this is true for these items or if it’s possible to request it without Worcestershire sauce somehow?

    • Neither the Caesar salad at Rancho del Zocalo nor the fried green tomato sandwich contain anchovies.

  • When did the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich change? The Chef that created the sauce for it is the one who told me that it does contain Anchovies and well, I think the chef would know.

  • Cindy, try the Veggie Gumbo at The Royal Street Veranda. I am not sure but I think the Veggie Burgers in Tomorrowland are vegan as well.

  • Pam, Thank you for this article. Being a vegetarian family, it is nice to know that Disney looks out for us vegetarians and vegans!
I do have one questions though…

Do any of the cheeses on these dishes contain Animal Rennet or Animal Enzymes?

    Thanks!

  • Are there many vegan options? Everything seems to be covered in cheese.

  • I’m not a Veg-head, our oldest daughter is, while in WDW and DL she has always had plenty of options, and if there wasn’t anything listed on the menu, most dine-in locations will gladly ask the Chef to fix something up.

While at DL, I tried the veggie-tater bake at Flo’s it was actually quite good, plus the view was great!

WDW is really great at working around diet restrictions, at the buffet in Germany in Epcot the head chef came out and gave our daughter a personal tour of the buffet to point out the non-meat items, he even made her veggie gravy!!! Along with a special veggie main dish, they made her feel extra special.

  • I have to echo Heather’s comments above. My family would really appreciate having more vegetarian offerings at Walt Disney World! I hope that the same or similar choices available in Anaheim will make their way onto the quick-service and table-service menus in Orlando. It would be great to see more dishes incorporating tofu, soy ground beef crumbles, soy sausage and soy chicken (just to name a few)!

Vegetarian dishes tend to be quite healthful (as long as they aren’t smothered in cheese); adding more of these types of dining options would really go a long way in promoting the “Mickey Check” concept!

  • let me second the praises of the 5 cheese Raviolis at Boardwalk Pizza. The flatbread Pizza is good too. I did not know about the Portabello Mushroom Sandwich at Award Wieners. I’ll try that next time

  • The Disney blog previously posted the recipe for the Flo’s Diner Veggie Tater Bake and we’ve been cooking it for months (though we call it Veggie Shepherd’s Pie).

Such a pleasure, then, to actually go to Flo’s last weekend and have the real thing. It was totally delicious, and together with (1) being in Carsland, which is one of the best things Disney ever built, (2) enjoying the fantastic 50’s music they play at Flo’s, and (3) enjoying a beer,* it was a real highlight of the trip.

(*True story: not everyone realizes they sell beer at California adventure. While we were at Flo’s, a dad came up to me, pointed at my cup and said “What are you drinking!?”
    I said, “a beer.”
He said “WHERE DID YOU GET IT!!?”
    I’m like “here.”
He says “ARE YOU SERIOUS!?” and runs off, lol.)

  • the rice bowl with tofu (and spicy korean sauce!) at Lucky Fortune Cookery is also delish… and filling!

  • Why doesn’t Walt Disney World have as many delicious vegetarian options as Disneyland? When we went out to Disneyland a few years ago, I was thrilled to have so many yummy veggie options to pick from. I was used to my very limited options that I have at the parks in Florida. PLEASE Disney – WDW needs to follow Disneyland’s model of providing lots of unique and tasty choices for vegetarians!

  • I have tried several of these items and a few from the comments as well (I love the Gumbo at Royal Veranda). There is also a delicious veggie option at Big Thunder BBQ as well as at Blue Bayou. 🙂
I have even been able to get a veggie version of the breakfast burrito at Tomorrowland Terrace, you just have to ask. You can also get in touch with the chef’s at the various food locations (even counter service) and ask them for veggie options.
I have had some amazing dining experiences with great chefs at the resort as a vegetarian. 🙂
Just ask. If the Cast Memeber says it is not possible, ask them to double check nicely, you will be pleasantly surprised from my experience. 😀

  • Thank You Pam ~
& Thanks to all, for the other comments noted below.

We’re a Vegetarian AP Family & each time that we visit the Parks we find yet another Vegetarian option. Please keep ’em coming! They’re the healthiest option for all ~ & Delicious!

Will you please keep this posting alive & add more as they become available? I’ve bookmarked this page on my computer ~ trusting that it won’t go anywhere ~ it’s a Great reference page!

Once again ~ Thank You & see you soon!
    Luv Donna

  • I’m vegan and have never had a problem finding great food at the resorts. Both servers and chefs have been wonderful about coming up with great suggestions and modifications where needed!

  • What about the tofu skewer at Paradise Garden Grill?

  • Since the late 1980’s Disney has done a lot to improve the gastronomic experience in the Parks ad at the resorts. Looking forward to sampling some of the delectable treats this year

  • Hey Disney, if that’s true about the anchovies in the FGT sandwich at HB, how about taking it out? Use a vegan Worcestershire sauce instead? Same for Caesars, and the broccoli cheese soup? I doubt people would notice much difference, and we can always use more options!

    • Denise – Neither the Caesar salad at Rancho del Zocalo nor the fried green tomato sandwich contain anchovies.

  • My wife is vegetarian and we’ve never had a problem at Disneyland, nor at Walt Disney World. There are many wonderful vegetarian options, and even when there may not be one on the menu the chefs at pretty much any of the sit down restaurants are happy to prepare something. Sometimes they have a special vegetarian menu which they’ll provide if asked. And we’ve even had the chef come out to the table to ask my wife what she prefers and then prepared a dish for her.

My parents are also on restricted diets due to heart health issues – low sodium & low fat. And they visit WDW many times a year (as FL residents) and look forward to it in part because of the dining options Disney provides.

I’m sure that with all of the visitors they have from all over the world, with all of the different dietary requirements, food allergies, etc., they must be quite used to it. I suspect vegetarian is one of the easier requirements they deal with.

  • I have loved the 4 cheese ravioli at story teller forever. It has been a while I might have to go get some.

  • You forgot to mention the 5 cheese ravioli at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta. Yummy!

  • Theses are great, but don’t forget the great Vegetarian Chili at Harbor Gallet, and one of my Wife’s Favs, the Vegetarian Gumbo at the Royal Street Veranda.

  • To be honest, I didn’t know about these options in the park. It’s a nice load off to know that if I had any vegetarian friends coming over state to the park they’re not going to starve or have to bring in their own food items.
Also, some of these look really tasty. I think I’ll have to try some of them next time I go to the park.

  • The Fried Green Tomato sandwich is not vegetarian, as the sauce contains anchovies.

    • Christoper – The fried green tomato sandwich at Hungry Bear Restaurant does not contain anchovies.

  • beware of Caesar dressing. It might have anchovies, via Worcestershire sauce…

  • “But the generous Caesar salad is our favorite”… – careful of Caesar dressing as it probably has Worcestershire sauce in it, which has, most likely, anchovies…

    • Michael – The Caesar salad at Rancho del Zocalo does not contain anchovies.
