Matterhorn Bobsleds and Monorail Shirts Coming to Disney Parks Online Store Starting August 18

I’m excited to announce that two Disney Parks attraction poster shirts will be released online from August 18-24. These new shirts feature nods to some classic Disney Park icons – the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland park and the Walt Disney World Monorail System in Florida. Disney Design Group artist Richard Terpstra created the artwork for these shirts that will be printed on Hanes Beefy tees.

The original Matterhorn Bobsleds poster that Richard referenced when designing the shirt was created by Paul Hartley in 1959, the year the attraction opened in California.

According to the “Poster Art of the Disney Parks” book by Walt Disney Imagineers Vanessa Hunt and Danny Handke, the artist who created the original monorail artwork is unknown. During a trip to California last year, Vanessa showed me that original monorail artwork in its various stages of completion (I even saw the pencil lines, which was a total Disney geek moment!).

Like many guests, I have fond memories of both the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction and the Walt Disney World Monorail. My son’s first ride at Disneyland park a few years ago was the Matterhorn Bobsleds. We visited Disneyland park again last September where he posed next to the attraction poster while wearing some dapper attire.

As for the Walt Disney World Monorail, I love watching it zip through Disney’s Contemporary Resort. I took the image shown above of monorails passing in the night while that gorgeous mural by Mary Blair looms in the background.

You can order these shirts starting August 18 by visiting http://www.DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents.

I also heard a practically perfect T-shirt will be offered on that same website from August 27-31 (it’s a must-have!).

Do you have a favorite memory of the Matterhorn Bobsleds or the monorail? Please share in the comments below.

  • This is it! This is the One I’ve been waiting for!
I ordered my Monorail System shirt first thing Monday morning.
I can’t wait ’til it gets here!

    • @John – Aces! That’s great to hear 🙂

  • Would LOVE to order a Monorail shirt for my son. Is there any chance they will be adding kids sizes to these new designs?

    • @Larissa – Unfortunately, we won’t be offering kid sizes for these particular shirts.

  • I was wondering if there will be a big thunder mountain railroad t-shirt??

  • Any idea when on the 18th the site will be up? The link says Page Not Found. I’m just so excited and can’t wait!

  • I hope they come out with vintage poster shirts for the Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean next!

  • I lived in Orlando in the late 1970s and had all the recorded Monorail spiels at each station memorized. So yeah, I’m getting a shirt. 🙂

  • Thank you for choosing another tee shirt color than yellow! 🙂 Blue looks good on me. Yellow, not so much. (Dole Whip shirt, I’m looking at you! Only looking, sadly not wearing.)

And thanks for that “practically perfect” heads up!

  • Speaking of sizing, I really wish they’d release more shirts in larger sizes. I’m 6’6″ and broad, and normally need *at least* a 3XLT, but normally 4XLT, and sometimes 5XLT in brands that run small. I have some 3XL Disney T-shirts, but they’re a bit too short and tight to wear most of the time. And it seems like most shirts aren’t offered in sizes beyond 3XL. Same for casual button shirts, polo shirts, etc. There are many I’d love to have, but I’ve tried on the 3XLs and they’re too small.

    • @Mr – Thank you for the feedback. I’ll share it with the merchandising teams.

  • james’ wife here – hope this isn’t deemed inappropriate but your son does indeed look dapper in his attire! reminds me of when my son wore those adorable bow ties! very cute 🙂

    • @James’ Wife – Thank you for the kind comment. He was such a trooper that day at Disneyland Resort. We had a blast dressing up. 🙂

  • Do you know if a child’s size will be offered in the monorail shirt? My nephew got the It’s A Small World shirt and loves it, and I know he would love the monorail one too!

    • @Juanita – Unfortunately, I don’t believe child sizes will be offered this time. Sorry 🙁

  • Steven, is there any update on the pullout poster books that were coming to Disneyland at the end of July. Been looking weekly and they still haven’t had them in yet. Thanks

    • @Christopher – That’s a great question. I’ll have to ask the team.

  • Deborah – I agree 100%! The men’s shirts do not fit me correctly!

  • These are definitely the two I’ve been waiting for! Will there be a “Two for” special like they sometimes offer for these releases???

    • @Jonathan – Yes, I believe there will be a deal of two shirts for $40.

  • Can I once more make a plea for ladies sizes in the T shirts? There is a difference you know.

    • @Deborah – Thank you for the feedback. I’ve shared it with the team.

  • My first visit to Walt Disney world was back in the mid 1970s when I was about five years old. At that age my world was pretty much separated into “real-life” things and “story” things. What I saw on TV was pretty much firmly in that “story things” camp. Walking up the ramp at the TTC station and seeing the gleaming white monorail train was the first time somthing from that story world landed right smack in the middle of my real life.

Even 40 years later, I still feel that magic when I see the monorail trains.

    • @Daniel – I completely relate! What a great story to share 🙂

  • I’ve had the monorail attraction poster in a frame on my wall for years – now I’ll be able to wear it! Awesome!

  • Will these be available in the Parks?

    • @John – At this time, these shirts will only be offered for a limited time on the Disney Parks online store. Visit http://www.DisneyStore.com/ParksEvents starting August 18 to place an order.

  • I have to have the Matterhorn shirt. My grandfather was a carpenter on the original construction.

    • @Belinda – WOW! That’s awesome 🙂
