Guests attending the D23 Expo 2017 at the Anaheim Convention Center from July 14-16 can celebrate the joy and magic of Disney history with specially curated “Throughout the Years” collections at the Disney Dream Store. These merchandise collections will celebrate key milestones at Disney Parks, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean 50th Anniversary, Space Mountain 40th Anniversary, Epcot 35th Anniversary, and Star Tours 30th Anniversary. I recently spoke with Richard Terpstra, Graphic Designer with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Creative Group, about creating four spectacular posters which served as the foundation for these collections.

“My Creative Director Doug Strayer and I loved working on this project for the D23 Expo as it celebrates some of our guests’ most beloved attractions and places at Disney Parks,” explained Richard. “One of my favorite parts of this project was collaborating with the Walt Disney Archives to obtain archival reference imagery. We used some of those images in the designs. Each poster has a unique art style inspired by a particular time period. We took elements from each poster to create an overall style guide which our merchandising partners referenced when creating the product assortments.”

Richard drew inspiration from vintage drive-in movie posters and advertisements from the 1960s for the Pirates of the Caribbean poster.

For the Space Mountain image, Richard partnered with Character Artist Dave Holbrook to create an image that is filled with 1970s futurism mixed with vintage travel posters from the 1920s.

Principal Character Artist Brian Blackmore provided character designs for the Epcot poster. Richard said that early 1980s arcade game packaging and VHS videotape covers influenced the poster’s overall look.

Finally, Richard worked with Senior Character Artist Ron Cohee to create the collage illustration for Star Tours.

Each image will be sold as an oversized tubed poster and a framed giclée. Guests visiting the Disney Dream Store will also find apparel, headwear, drinkware, ornaments, and more.

We will also release limited edition pins for each milestone. The individual pins will have edition sizes of 1,000 each, while the jumbo-sized pins will each have an edition size of 500. Guests may also find Vinylmation Eachez figures inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Tours.

Look for additional previews from the Disney Dream Store in the coming weeks. You can discover the latest D23 Expo 2017 news by visiting D23expo.com.

  • Unlike the pins, will there be a large stock of the posters and t-shirts available? I know the lines for the stores are always long, and I was wondering if you anticipate these selling out. Thanks!

  • Can you tell me how much the Epcot poster is going to cost at the Disney Dreams Store?

    • @Matthew – Each poster will have a retail of $95. Please note all retails are subject to change without notice.

  • @stevenmiller By any chance will any of the March Magic merch that was avail. at the Disneystore website during March Magic this year be avail. at D23?

    • @Alissa – Unfortunately, we will not have any March Magic 2017 products at the Disney Dream Store.

  • How many pins are we limited to buying…i.e. 1 pin per person? Or is it 2 per person? What are the limits on all the other items? And are all these items exclusive solely to the expo or will they be released in the parks at a later time? Thx!

    • @Andrea – Normal purchasing limits from Disney Parks would apply to the Disney Dream Store. Typically, open edition products have a limit of 10 items per item, per guest. Limited edition pins have a purchase limit of 2 pins, per style, per guest. I would refer to the Disney Dream Store at the Expo for any changes or clarifications to purchase limits. Many of these items were developed especially for the D23 Expo 2017.

  • I love the Epcot merch! I am a D23 member, but am not able to travel to California for the Expo. Is it possible to make these items available for D23 members after the Expo. I really hope so. Thanks!

    • @Joyanne – Select products might be available for D23 members following the Expo. It will depend on popularity of products during the event.

  • Love, love, love Richard Terpstra’s work! He knows what us vintage Epcot Center collectors want! Can you tell me the price of the ringer t-shirt?? Thank you.

    • @Noreen – The ringer tee will have a retail of $32.99.

  • I am so in trouble this year. Can’t wait to pick up some of these items at the Expo.

  • That Retro EPCOT Center stuff is amazing!!!!! I wish I was going to the D23 Expo.

    • @Andrea – I agree! Hooray for the 21st Century

  • You mention “oversized tubed posters”. Does that mean they will come with a tube and no need to bring our own.

    • @Monica – Each poster is printed in a 4-color process with a satin finish on smooth, durable cover weight stock. Comes rolled and tubed, suitable for framing. Dimensions for each poster: 37″ W x 54″ H.

  • Really love the Star Tours collection! Will any of the pieces make it to the parks? I’m not able to go to D23 and would like to purchase some of the items. Thanks!

    • @Ashley – The majority of items in the “Through the Years Collections” were created especially for the Disney Dream Store. Some items may debut at the D23 Expo, like the Interchangeable Bow Collection; Dooney & Bourke handbags; and select toys and plush. Epcot will have a separate anniversary collection being released this fall at Walt Disney World Resort.

  • I love the Epcot design will these items also be released at the park in October?
